Why shop with us?
The 2020 Kirchheim Steinacker Spätburgunder trocken from Weingut Gabel is a beautifully precise, Burgundy-inspired Pinot Noir from one of Pfalz’s coolest and most calcareous sites. Crafted with a focus on ecological farming, old-vine selection massale material, and careful cellar work, it combines elegance, minerality, and quiet power in a style that reflects both site and tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, graceful ruby tone typical of refined Spätburgunder. The nose unfolds with sour cherry, forest floor, and a delicate hint of caramelized nut and toast, giving the wine both freshness and depth.
On the palate, it is taut and focused, with fresh acidity, fine mineral grip, and very pure fruit. The cool, structured style gives it tension and length, and while already expressive, it has the balance and backbone to develop beautifully over time.
Production
The Kirchheimer Steinacker is among the coolest and most limestone-rich parcels in the Pfalz, which helps shape the wine’s precision and mineral character. The vines come from Burgundy selection massale with high planting density, and the grapes are selectively harvested by hand; some whole clusters are fermented in wooden vats before the wine spends 18 months in barrique and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a natural match for veal cheeks, rack of lamb, or roasted duck breast, and it also works well with mushroom dishes or beetroot risotto. Serve it slightly chilled at around 16–18°C, and if possible, decant gently for 30–60 minutes to let the aromatics and structure open up.
Producer
Weingut Gabel is a family estate with more than 350 years of history, now run by Oliver Gabel in the 13th generation. The winery has earned a strong reputation in the Pfalz for Burgundian varieties and organic cultivation, and its wines are especially admired for their clarity, finesse, and site expression.
