The 2019 Erdödy Groszer Wein is a single-vineyard expression from Burgenland, one of Austria’s most distinctive wine regions. Crafted with meticulous handwork, natural fermentation and extended maturation in used wooden casks, it offers a compelling combination of depth, mineral character and refined elegance. Its terroir-driven style reflects the growing reputation of Burgenland for concentrated, age-worthy wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a powerful, structured profile, with an expressive nose of ripe cherries, dark woodland berries and plums. Mediterranean herbs, black pepper, graphite and subtle roasted notes add complexity, while further aeration reveals nuances of tobacco, leather and mineral spice. On the palate, it is precise and beautifully balanced, combining lively acidity with fine-grained tannins and impressive mineral tension. The finish is long, elegant and persistently spicy. Its concentration, freshness and structure suggest excellent ageing potential, with further complexity likely to develop over the coming years.

Production
The vines are rooted in Burgenland soils composed of limestone, slate and iron-rich elements, contributing structure, depth and a distinctive mineral character. The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously selected before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Extended maturation over several months in used wooden casks preserves the wine’s natural character while adding texture, complexity and elegance.

Food & Serving
A versatile choice for richly flavoured dishes, this wine pairs particularly well with game, lamb, braised beef and mature hard cheeses. It is also well suited to mushroom dishes, truffles and sophisticated Austrian cuisine. Serve lightly cool at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for around one to two hours before serving to allow the wine’s layered aromas and mineral complexity to fully unfold.
