Description
The 2019 Barolo Pira from Roagna is a classic single-vineyard Barolo from one of Castiglione Falletto’s most celebrated sites. Built on precision, depth, and remarkable longevity, it reflects the kind of traditional craftsmanship that has made Barolo one of Italy’s most admired wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the translucent garnet hue typical of great Nebbiolo, with a poised, refined appearance. The bouquet is layered and expressive, unfolding with cherries, rose petals, red berries, and dried herbs, before moving into notes of tar, spice, and subtle mineral nuance.
On the palate, it is powerful yet finely detailed, with firm, grippy tannins and vibrant acidity giving the wine its signature structure. The fruit is deep and focused, supported by a chalky tension and a long, noble finish. This is a wine built for the long haul and should age beautifully for many years, gaining complexity and harmony over time.
Production
The Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto is one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, known for its calcareous marl soils and exposed hillside position, which help produce wines of depth, clarity, and longevity. Roagna follows a traditional approach: grapes are harvested by hand, carefully selected, and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, followed by extended maceration and long aging in large traditional oak casks to preserve terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an excellent match for braised beef, game, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses, as well as classic Piedmontese cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting several hours ahead of serving, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to fully open and show its complexity.
Producer
Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional estates, with a reputation for uncompromising vineyard work and long, patient élevage. The estate is widely admired for its dedication to site expression and classical Barolo style, and it has earned a strong following among collectors and Nebbiolo enthusiasts for producing wines of depth, finesse, and age-worthy structure.
