Description

The 2015 Westhofen Morstein “Felix” Spätburgunder trocken is a rare, small-production Pinot Noir from Weingut Keller, one of Germany’s most acclaimed estates. Sourced from the prestigious Morstein vineyard, it expresses Keller’s Burgundy-inspired approach through remarkable depth, fine tannins and limestone-driven precision. The outstanding 2015 vintage adds both concentration and the structure required for long-term ageing.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour with developing garnet hues. Its complex bouquet combines ripe black cherries, wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with delicate notes of violet, rose petal, cedar, spice and graphite. With further bottle age, nuances of truffle, forest floor, black tea, fine tobacco and subtle smoke begin to emerge. The palate is powerful yet remarkably silky, with finely grained tannins, lively acidity and a pronounced chalky minerality. Concentrated fruit is balanced by freshness and precision, leading to a long, layered and elegant finish. Already beautifully complex, this Spätburgunder has the structure to develop for several more decades under ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes come from carefully selected parcels in Westhofen’s Morstein vineyard, where limestone, marl and limestone scree soils contribute mineral character, finesse and precision. Yields are rigorously reduced, and the grapes are harvested and strictly selected by hand. Fermentation takes place traditionally on the skins with native yeast, followed by gentle extraction to preserve the elegance of the Pinot Noir. The wine then matures for many months in high-quality French barriques, with malolactic fermentation completed in oak. Bottling is carried out with minimal intervention to preserve the character of the vintage and site.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 15–17°C, allowing the wine to gain aromatic expression without losing freshness. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when opening a younger bottle, although mature examples may benefit from gentle handling and a shorter decant to preserve their delicate tertiary aromas. Its depth and refined structure make it an excellent partner for venison, roast pigeon, guinea fowl, veal tenderloin, lamb, braised mushrooms and truffle dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses such as Comté, Brillat-Savarin and Époisses.

Producer
Weingut Keller is a benchmark estate in Rheinhessen, renowned for wines that combine precise site expression with a distinctly Burgundian sense of elegance and balance. Based in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, the family-run winery has gained international recognition for its exceptional dry Rieslings and increasingly sought-after Spätburgunder. The estate’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimalist cellar approach have made its wines some of Germany’s most collectible and influential expressions of terroir.
