Description

2014 Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd trocken from Nikolaihof is a precise, mineral-driven white wine that captures the character of one of the Wachau’s most respected sites. Made by one of Austria’s oldest estates and shaped by biodynamic farming, it combines clarity, tension, and deep sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear golden hue. The nose opens with ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, and a subtle herbal spice, all framed by a distinct mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is taut and focused, with lively acidity, pronounced minerality, and a long, saline finish. It has the structure and balance to age beautifully, gaining extra depth and complexity over time.

Production
The grapes come from Vom Stein, a vineyard defined by poor primary rock soils with a high proportion of gneiss and mica schist. These conditions naturally limit vigor and contribute to the wine’s sharp mineral backbone and refined acidity. The fruit was selectively harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts. Aging took place in large, old oak casks, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the site.

Food & Serving
This Riesling pairs especially well with roasted pike perch, char, or shellfish, and it also works nicely with lightly spicy Asian dishes or mature hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help it open up if served young.

Producer
Nikolaihof in the Wachau is among Austria’s oldest wineries and has worked according to biodynamic principles for decades. The estate is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the region, known for wines of authenticity, precision, and aging potential. Its long history and careful craftsmanship have earned it a strong reputation both at home and internationally.
