Description
The 1989 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve is one of the early releases of Viña Errázuriz’s iconic flagship wine, named after the winery’s founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz. A mature Chilean Bordeaux-style red from Aconcagua Valley, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the elegance and longevity of one of the region’s pioneering top cuvées. As a cellar-aged wine, its condition and provenance are especially important considerations.
Tasting Notes
After more than three decades of bottle ageing, the wine is expected to show a mature ruby-garnet colour with developing brick-toned highlights. Its aromatic profile is complex and distinctly tertiary, combining dried black cherries, cassis and stewed plum with cedar, cigar box, leather, tobacco, truffle and forest floor. With aeration, further nuances of dried herbs, graphite, dark chocolate and balsamic spice may emerge.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and harmonious, with mature tannins, well-integrated acidity and a long, refined finish. The primary fruit has receded into the background, allowing the savoury and earthy notes of bottle maturity to take centre stage. While the wine is ready to drink, it should be handled with care, as further ageing potential will depend largely on its storage history, fill level and overall bottle condition.
Production
The vineyards are located in Chile’s Aconcagua Valley, where warm, sunny days are moderated by cooling influences from the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. Predominantly stony alluvial soils, rich in gravel and clay, encourage deep rooting and contribute structure, concentration and mineral freshness. In the late 1980s, Don Maximiano was principally based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller proportions of other Bordeaux varieties depending on the vintage. Detailed technical information regarding the exact 1989 blend and élevage has not been published, although wines of this era were traditionally matured in French oak with long-term development in mind.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant gently shortly before serving to separate any sediment, but avoid prolonged aeration until the wine has been tasted, as very mature wines can lose their aromatic detail quickly. Its refined structure pairs beautifully with beef tenderloin, rack of lamb, venison, braised beef cheeks and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also complements mature cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère, Mimolette and aged Cheddar.
Producer
Founded by Don Maximiano Errázuriz in Aconcagua Valley in 1870, Viña Errázuriz is one of Chile’s historic wineries and has played an important role in establishing the country’s reputation for premium Bordeaux varieties. Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve was created as the estate’s top cuvée, reflecting the ambition to produce long-lived, terroir-driven wines from Aconcagua. The 1989 vintage offers a fascinating glimpse into the early period of this important wine and the traditional winemaking philosophy behind it.
