Description
The 1984 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve is a landmark in Chilean wine history and the first vintage of Viña Errázuriz’s later flagship wine. Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon in the Aconcagua Valley, it captures the elegance and structure of classic Chilean Cabernet while offering exceptional significance for collectors and lovers of mature wine.
Tasting Notes
With more than four decades of bottle age, the wine is expected to show a mature garnet hue with brick-red reflections. Its bouquet is notably complex, revealing dried blackcurrant, plum and fig alongside cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor, truffle and delicate smoky nuances. On the palate, it remains remarkably lively, supported by fine acidity, silky mature tannins and a long, gently spiced finish. This is a fully mature collector’s wine, best enjoyed now, although well-stored examples may continue to offer pleasure in the short term.
Production
The vineyards lie in the Aconcagua Valley, around 100 kilometres north of Santiago, where warm Mediterranean days are tempered by cool Pacific winds. This combination creates a long growing season and steady ripening, while the predominantly stony, mineral-rich alluvial soils provide concentration, freshness and structure. The 1984 vintage was produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and matured for five to seven months in traditional Chilean raulí wood casks, with limited use of new French barriques to keep the fruit and sense of place at the forefront. At 12.5% alcohol, it presents a particularly classic and refined style.
Food & Serving
Its mature character makes it a natural partner for braised lamb, beef tenderloin with truffle sauce, game dishes, veal cheeks and well-aged hard cheeses. Serve lightly cool, at approximately 16–18°C, and open carefully. Gentle decanting is recommended to remove any sediment, but prolonged aeration should be avoided, as a wine of this age may be delicate once exposed to air.
Producer
Viña Errázuriz was founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errázuriz, with the ambition of producing wines that could express the exceptional potential of Chile’s Aconcagua Valley. The 1984 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve marked the beginning of the estate’s flagship wine story and helped establish Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon as a serious presence on the international stage. Today, this inaugural vintage is regarded as one of the country’s historically important wines, combining rarity, provenance and the finesse of mature Cabernet.
