The 1967 Reserva Tinto from Viúva Gomes is a remarkably rare Colares red, shaped by the Atlantic coast and more than five decades of bottle ageing. Made from the region’s traditional Ramisco vines—many of them planted on their own roots in deep sandy soils—it is a captivating historical wine with a distinctly maritime character and exceptional provenance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a mature brownish garnet colour with brick-red reflections. Its aromatic profile is nuanced and gently evolved, revealing dried cherry, forest floor, leather, delicate herbs and subtle balsamic notes, alongside a characteristic saline and iodine-like coastal impression. Light to medium-bodied yet firm and precise, the palate is defined by lively acidity, finely mature tannins and a persistent, savoury finish. Rather than offering abundant fruit, it displays depth, origin and an almost archaic complexity. As with any wine of this age, its condition will depend greatly on storage, ullage and the state of the cork; well-preserved bottles may still show remarkable freshness. The 650 ml bottle is a classic format for this historic wine, and the natural cork was documented as having been renewed in 2000.

Production
The wine comes from Colares, one of Portugal’s most distinctive and rare wine regions, situated northwest of Lisbon near the Atlantic Ocean. Ramisco vines traditionally grow in deep sandy soils, where many remain ungrafted because the sand offered natural protection from phylloxera. The cool, windy and humid maritime climate, together with salt-laden sea air, contributes to the wine’s freshness and mineral, saline character. The 1967 vintage was produced according to traditional methods, with fermentation in large vessels followed by extended ageing in large wooden casks made from exotic woods. It contains 11% alcohol by volume, with total acidity of 7.1 g/l and a pH of 3.4.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18–19°C with game, braised venison, pigeon, duck, mature beef, wild mushroom dishes or robust hard cheeses. It can also complement earthy dishes featuring root vegetables and truffles. Due to its advanced age, stand the bottle upright slowly before opening, handle it carefully and decant gently if necessary to remove sediment. Opening the bottle in advance may allow the aromas to develop, although prolonged aeration should be approached cautiously.
