Description

Zorah Heritage Sireni 2020 shines a spotlight on one of Armenia’s rarest native red varieties, capturing the character of the Artsakh highlands in a refined, contemporary style. Crafted by pioneering estate Zorah, this wine offers an elegant expression of Sireni (sometimes known locally as Artsakh Sireni), blended with the equally indigenous Arati grape for extra nuance and structure. Rooted in one of the world’s most ancient wine cultures, Heritage Sireni bridges thousands of years of tradition with meticulous modern winemaking, resulting in a distinctive, terroir-driven red that feels both authentic and remarkably polished.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Zorah Heritage Sireni 2020 shows a deep ruby to garnet hue with lively violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure, dark-berry fruit—think black cherry, wild plum and crushed blackberry—layered with dried herbs, black tea, cracked pepper and a subtle, ferrous minerality that speaks clearly of its mountainous origins. Gentle notes of violet, forest floor and a touch of sweet spice emerge as the wine breathes. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a vibrant, lifted core of dark fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of ripe black cherry, mulberry and bramble are intertwined with hints of tobacco leaf, licorice, savory herbs and a stony, almost graphite-like edge. The natural acidity from the cooler, high-altitude climate keeps everything precise and energetic, leading to a long, dry, mineral-etched finish. While already approachable with some air, the 2020 vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully for 6–10 years from vintage, developing more complexity and tertiary notes over time.

Production
Heritage Sireni is sourced from vineyards in the Artsakh region, where Sireni and Arati thrive in a mild yet distinctly continental climate, marked by warm days, cool nights and long, dry growing seasons. The vines are rooted in poor, rocky soils—rich in limestone and stone fragments—that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while the elevation helps preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to protect the fruit, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. In keeping with Zorah’s philosophy of expressing terroir, fermentation is carried out with particular attention to gentle extraction to highlight purity of fruit and texture rather than heaviness, followed by maturation that balances subtle oak (or traditional vessels, depending on cuvée) and time on fine lees to refine the tannins and harmonize the blend before bottling.

Food & Serving
Zorah Heritage Sireni 2020 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted meats, game and richly flavored, herb-driven dishes. Try it alongside lamb chops with rosemary, beef kebabs, slow-cooked lamb shank, or duck with pomegranate glaze; it also works wonderfully with mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables, mature hard cheeses and hearty Armenian or Eastern Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both its fruit and savory complexity. Decant for 45–60 minutes before serving, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic spectrum and silken texture.

Producer
Zorah is one of Armenia’s most acclaimed and influential wineries, widely credited with helping to reintroduce the country’s extraordinary viticultural heritage to the world stage. Founded by Zorik Gharibian, the estate is based in the highlands of Vayots Dzor and works almost exclusively with indigenous Armenian grape varieties, combining ancient traditions—such as the use of local karas (clay amphorae)—with precise, modern oenology. From the outset, Zorah has focused on low-yielding vineyards, old vines and unique, high-altitude sites that reflect Armenia’s position as one of the cradles of wine. The winery’s flagship bottlings have garnered international critical praise and placed Armenia firmly on the map for adventurous wine lovers, with wines like Heritage Sireni expanding the conversation beyond well-known regions and showcasing the depth and diversity of the country’s native grapes.
