Description
Château d’Yquem is the benchmark for great Sauternes and the only estate to hold the title of Premier Cru Supérieur, a distinction that reflects its legendary status in Bordeaux. The 2005 vintage is a particularly admired expression, combining richness, precision, and remarkable balance in a wine of rare pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Yquem 2005 shows a luminous golden hue, hinting at its depth and concentration. The nose is intensely aromatic, with layers of honey, candied citrus, ripe stone fruit, saffron, and subtle floral and toasted notes. On the palate, it is opulent yet poised, with the sweetness beautifully lifted by vibrant acidity and a long, elegant finish. The wine has outstanding aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully for decades.
Production
Produced in Sauternes, south of Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem benefits from a unique microclimate where morning mists and afternoon sunshine encourage the development of noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. Grapes are harvested by hand in multiple selective passes, often berry by berry, to capture only the perfectly affected fruit. Fermentation and élevage are carried out with great care in oak barrels, contributing texture, complexity, and longevity.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine. Decanting is generally not necessary, though allowing it to breathe briefly can enhance its aromatic expression in its youth.
Producer
Château d’Yquem is one of Bordeaux’s most famous estates, with a history stretching back centuries and a reputation built on uncompromising selection and exceptional quality. Located in the Sauternes appellation, it has long been regarded as the reference point for sweet wines worldwide. Its rare ability to produce wines of both richness and precision has earned it an enduring place among the great names of the wine world.
