Description
Wiegner Etna Bianco Rampante 2022 is a refined Sicilian white that captures the energy and mineral drive of Mount Etna’s volcanic slopes. Coming from the highly regarded Rampante cru, this wine offers the tension, freshness and precision that have made Etna Bianco one of Italy’s most exciting categories. It’s an elegant, terroir-driven white with real character and a clear sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Etna Bianco Rampante shows a pale straw color with greenish highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is vibrant and focused, with citrus notes of lemon zest and grapefruit, followed by green apple, white peach and delicate floral tones. Underneath sits a distinctive volcanic minerality—think crushed rock, sea spray and a gentle smoky nuance.
On the palate, this is precise and linear, with bright acidity giving the wine a mouthwatering, almost saline drive. Flavors of lemon, lime, crisp pear and stone fruit are layered with fennel, wild herbs and a chalky, flinty edge that lingers on the finish. The texture is both fine and persistent, with a clean, mineral backbone that keeps it refreshing. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 3–6 years, gaining more savory and nutty notes with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in the renowned Rampante area, this wine is based predominantly on Carricante, complemented by traditional local white varieties. The vines grow on ancient volcanic soils rich in ash, basalt and minerals, at higher altitudes where warm Sicilian days are tempered by cool nights, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches in the steep, terraced vineyards. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to highlight purity, freshness and terroir expression, with a period on fine lees to add texture and complexity without masking the wine’s vibrant, mineral-driven character.
Food & Serving
Wiegner Etna Bianco Rampante 2022 is a natural partner for seafood—think grilled prawns, seared scallops, oysters, octopus or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also works beautifully with sushi, crudo, vegetable-based pasta dishes, light risotti, goat cheese and fresh young cheeses, as well as Sicilian specialties featuring citrus, capers and herbs. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to let the aromatics open up. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger glass or giving it 10–15 minutes in the glass will help reveal more of its mineral and herbal complexity.
Producer
Wiegner is a quality-focused producer on the slopes of Mount Etna, dedicated to expressing the unique character of this dramatic volcanic terroir. Working in one of Sicily’s most dynamic wine regions, the estate combines respect for local grape varieties—especially Carricante and Nerello Mascalese—with attentive vineyard work and thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking. Wines from their Rampante parcels have contributed to the growing reputation of Etna as a source of some of Italy’s most distinctive, ageworthy wines. Through careful vineyard management and an emphasis on purity and elegance, Wiegner has become a respected name among enthusiasts seeking authentic, site-specific expressions from Etna.
