Description

Weingut Ziereisen Syrah GE 2021 is a quietly powerful German red that shows just how far Syrah has come in Baden’s warming climate. Grown on Jurassic limestone in the Markgräflerland, this is a cool-climate interpretation that favors precision, spice, and finesse over sheer ripeness. First planted by Hanspeter Ziereisen in 1999, these Syrah vines were something of a pioneering experiment in the region and are now among the benchmarks for the grape in Germany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Syrah GE 2021 presents a deep, dark ruby color with a slight violet rim, reflecting both concentration and youth. The nose opens with a core of dark fruits—blackberry and cassis to the fore—layered with typical Syrah spice: black pepper, crushed peppercorns, and a cool eucalyptus note. Hints of graphite, dried herbs, and a touch of smoky oak from its time in barrique add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, the wine is impressively cool and focused, with a taut, linear profile that underscores its cool-climate origin. Juicy black fruits are framed by fresh, almost stony acidity and fine-grained, firmly structured tannins. The spice character echoes the nose—eucalyptus, black pepper, and a subtle savory, almost gamey nuance—while the restrained use of oak brings gentle toast and a touch of cocoa in the background. The finish is long, dry, and precise, suggesting excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, this Syrah should develop additional complexity and tertiary notes over 8–12 years, possibly longer in ideal conditions.

Production
The Syrah GE 2021 comes from a limestone-rich parcel in the Markgräflerland, shaped by Jurassic (Jurakalk) soils that lend the wine its tension, minerality, and cool, focused character. The vineyard’s southern influence is balanced by its relatively cool climate, allowing Syrah to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes for the GE are harvested exclusively by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the fermenters. After picking, the fruit is destemmed but the stems (Rappen) remain in contact with the must for a full eight weeks of maceration, bringing additional structure, spice, and freshness. Following pressing, the wine is transferred to barriques from the renowned cooper Aßmann, where it matures for around 20 months, with only about 15% new oak. This patient élevage in largely used barrels allows the grape and terroir to take center stage while the oak quietly polishes texture and complexity.

Food & Serving
This Syrah is a natural partner for robust, savory dishes: think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, braised beef cheeks, venison with dark berry jus, or roasted duck with earthy root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, hard cow’s milk cheeses, and dishes featuring black pepper, wild herbs, or mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both the freshness and the depth; too warm and it may lose some of its precision. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to relax and the dark fruit and spice to fully unfurl in the glass.

Producer
Weingut Ziereisen, based in Efringen-Kirchen in Baden’s Markgräflerland, has built a reputation as one of the region’s most characterful and terroir-driven estates. Under the stewardship of Hanspeter and Edeltraud Ziereisen, the winery shifted early toward low-intervention, artisanal winemaking with a strong focus on expressing the limestone-rich soils of their hillside vineyards. While initially known for varieties like Gutedel and Spätburgunder, Ziereisen has become a key name in Germany’s new wave of ambitious, site-specific reds—including pioneering work with Syrah. Long élevage, minimal manipulation, and an unwavering commitment to quality have made the estate a reference point in Baden and a favorite among sommeliers and enthusiasts seeking distinctive, ageworthy wines with a clear sense of place.
