Weingut Ziereisen Syrah GE 2021 is a distinctive German Syrah that shows just how far premium red wine production in Baden has evolved. Made from one of the region’s earlier plantings of this southern variety, it combines dark, spicy character with a cool, refined profile that reflects both the vineyard and Hanspeter Ziereisen’s thoughtful approach.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it opens with deep, dark fruit and an immediately inviting sense of ripeness. Blackberry and cassis lead the nose, followed by Syrah’s classic savory-spicy edge: eucalyptus, black pepper, and a subtle herbal freshness. On the palate, the wine is impressively cool and composed, with a firm structure and a focused, linear feel. The long élevage adds polish and complexity without overshadowing the fruit, and the wine should continue to evolve gracefully over the coming years.

Production
The Syrah vines were planted in 1999 on a Jura limestone-dominated parcel in the Markgräflerland, a terroir that gives the wine its mineral tension and cooler expression. After hand harvesting, the grapes are crushed and the must remains on the stems for eight weeks, allowing extended extraction and depth before pressing. The wine then matures for 20 months in barriques from the well-known Aßmann cooperage, with only 15% new oak.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, roast beef, game, or richly seasoned dishes such as pepper steak and braised short ribs. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for an hour or two is recommended to let the aromas and structure fully open.
