Weingut Zähringer Spätburgunder Malterergarten Réserve 2022 is a refined single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Baden, made to showcase both place and precision. From biodynamically farmed limestone-rich vineyards around Heitersheim, it combines the warmth of one of Germany’s best Pinot Noir regions with the finesse and restraint that have made Zähringer a benchmark producer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby-red color with an elegant, youthful sheen. The nose opens with cherry, ripe raspberry, and dark forest berries, followed by subtle spice, a touch of smoke, woodland earth, and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is supple and full-bodied, yet lifted by vivid acidity and fine-grained tannins. The fruit is juicy and precise, with a mineral, lightly savory finish that adds length and definition. Thanks to its structure and the depth from extended oak aging, it has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over the next several years.

Production
The grapes come from the Malterergarten single vineyard in Baden’s Markgräflerland, where warm conditions and limestone soils provide ideal circumstances for Spätburgunder. Zähringer works biodynamically and keeps yields low, with manual harvesting and spontaneous fermentation to preserve the vineyard’s natural expression. The Réserve style is aged for 16–18 months in oak, including traditional large Baden casks and French barriques, giving the wine added complexity without masking its Pinot Noir purity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast duck, veal, game birds, mushroom dishes, and dishes with earthy or truffled elements. It also works well with grilled salmon or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 14–16°C and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if the wine is opened young, to help the aromatics and texture fully unfold.

Weingut Zähringer is a family-owned estate in Heitersheim, Baden, with roots dating back to 1844. Now led by sixth-generation winemaker Fabian Zähringer, the estate has long been recognized for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, having converted to organic farming in 1987 and to Demeter-certified biodynamics in 2010. Today, Zähringer is especially respected for elegant, terroir-driven Spätburgunder and Chardonnay with a Burgundian sense of finesse, freshness, and mineral detail.
