Description
Weingut Wolf Rosé Sekt #01 Extra Brut is a finely crafted German sparkling rosé from the sun-drenched Pfalz region, blending elegance with a refreshingly dry profile. Made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), it offers a sophisticated, Champagne-inspired style with a distinctly German character. This limited cuvée (#01) captures the modern face of Pfalz sekt, where precision, purity of fruit and finesse are front and center.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Rosé Sekt shows a delicate, pale salmon hue with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its careful bottle fermentation. On the nose, expect fresh red berry aromas—wild strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry—layered with notes of citrus zest, white flowers and a subtle hint of brioche and crushed chalk.
On the palate, the Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine beautifully dry and linear, highlighting vibrant acidity and a taut, mineral backbone. Crunchy red fruits meet pink grapefruit and lemon peel, with a touch of stone fruit from the Chardonnay and a gentle creaminess from time on the lees. The finish is long, crisp and saline, making it both a serious aperitif and a versatile food companion. Enjoy it now for its energy and precision, or over the next 2–4 years as the brioche and nutty nuances become more pronounced.
Production
Hailing from the Pfalz, one of Germany’s warmest and most quality-driven wine regions, this sekt benefits from loess, limestone and sandstone soils that lend both ripeness and a distinctive mineral edge. The grapes—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc—are typically hand-harvested at relatively low yields to preserve acidity and aromatic purity, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. After gentle pressing and cool fermentation in stainless steel (and possibly a portion in neutral oak for added texture), the base wines are blended into a precise cuvée. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle in the traditional method, followed by extended lees aging to develop fine bubbles, creamy texture and subtle complexity, before disgorgement and a very low Extra Brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This Rosé Sekt #01 Extra Brut is a superb aperitif, but it truly shines at the table. Pair it with oysters, sashimi, ceviche or shrimp cocktail to highlight its brisk acidity, or serve alongside smoked salmon, sushi, crab cakes and light fish dishes. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, soft goat’s cheese, fresh salads with berries, or lightly spiced Asian dishes such as tuna tartare with sesame and soy. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 5–10 minutes before serving and pouring into proper sparkling wine flutes or tulip-shaped glasses will let the delicate aromas fully unfold.
