Description

Wittmann’s Chardonnay Steingrube brings the estate’s precision to a limestone-influenced Erste Lage site in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. First released with the 2022 vintage, it reflects the growing reputation of the estate’s Burgundy varieties alongside its celebrated Rieslings.

Tasting Notes
Elegant, precise and structured, the 2023 is marked by lively acidity. Its year in selected barriques, followed by a further winter in stainless steel, lends context to its measured style; detailed appearance and aroma notes are not available. The wine’s acidity and structure suggest it should develop gracefully over the next few years.

Production
The Steingrube vineyard lies north of Westhofen and has varied soils, with limestone-rich parcels particularly well suited to Chardonnay. Grapes were selectively hand-harvested and gently pressed, then matured for around a year on the full lees in barriques from selected coopers, with approximately 25% new oak. A further winter on fine lees in stainless steel completed the élevage. The wine is presented as organic.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish, scallops or creamy mushroom dishes. Decanting is not essential; a little time in the glass can help the wine open up.

Producer
Weingut Wittmann is internationally renowned for Rieslings from Westhofen’s Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen vineyards. Its white and red Burgundy varieties have also attracted increasing attention, with the Steingrube Chardonnay extending the estate’s work with Burgundian grapes in Rheinhessen.
