Description

Weingut Weninger’s 2020 Furmint Stein comes from a historically prized hillside in Sopron, where stony soils and a warm Pannonian climate shape a distinctive expression of the grape. Made from biodynamically grown fruit on old root systems, it is fermented spontaneously and matured on its lees in large wooden casks.

Tasting Notes
Furmint is known for its lively acidity and mineral character. Expect a dry, focused style, with orchard-fruit notes and a stony edge reflecting the vineyard’s gneiss and mica schist soils; the long lees ageing may lend added texture. Specific tasting notes and the wine’s ageing potential are not provided.

Production
The Steiner vineyard lies on an east-facing slope near Sopron, on dry, warm soils of gneiss and mica schist. In 2017, Franz Weninger grafted Furmint onto vines more than 20 years old, allowing the new variety to benefit from their established root systems. Biodynamically farmed grapes were selectively hand-harvested, pressed directly and spontaneously fermented, then aged for 17 months in large wooden casks on the full lees without added sulphur.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C. Its fresh acidity and mineral profile should suit freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry and dishes with herbs or a gentle cream sauce. A short rest in the glass can help the wine open; decanting is not essential.
