Description
Weingut Rings Riesling KREID Bio 2020 is a finely etched, organically certified Riesling from the limestone-rich soils of Germany’s Pfalz region. Crafted by one of the most exciting estates in northern Pfalz, this wine showcases Riesling’s precision, minerality, and vibrant fruit in a bone-dry, modern style. The name “KREID” (German for chalk) points directly to its terroir, where calcareous soils lend the wine its striking tension and saline finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Riesling KREID Bio 2020 is pale straw with green reflections, signaling youthful freshness and energy. The nose is immediately expressive, with notes of lime zest, green apple, white peach and crisp pear layered over wet stone, crushed shell and a hint of fresh herbs. Subtle floral nuances—think white blossom and elderflower—add lift and elegance.
On the palate, this is a dry, focused Riesling with a linear, mouthwatering acidity that frames pure citrus and stone-fruit flavors. Lemon, lime and grapefruit mingle with a chalky, salty minerality that feels almost electric on the tongue. The mid-palate is light to medium-bodied yet concentrated, with a very clean, precise finish that lingers on notes of stone, citrus peel and a delicate herbal touch. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, it also has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, developing more complexity and gentle honeyed and smoky nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The Riesling KREID Bio 2020 comes from organically farmed vineyards in the Pfalz, where limestone and loess soils dominate and impart a distinctive, chalk-driven minerality to the wines. The region’s relatively warm, dry climate allows Riesling to reach excellent ripeness while still retaining bright acidity, especially on higher, breezier sites. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure careful selection and preserve the purity of fruit. In the cellar, Weingut Rings focuses on a gentle, minimalist approach: slow, cool fermentation—often in stainless steel and/or large neutral vessels—helps protect aromatic precision, while extended lees contact can add texture and complexity without masking the terroir. The result is a taut, terroir-driven Riesling with clarity, finesse, and a distinctly chalky backbone.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with refined, delicate dishes. Think ceviche, sushi and sashimi, oysters, grilled prawns, and light fish dishes with citrus or herb-based sauces. It also works wonderfully with Asian-inspired cuisine—such as Vietnamese salads, lightly spiced Thai dishes, or Japanese tempura—where its acidity and minerality cut through subtle spice and richness. On the savory side, try it with goat cheese, fresh cheeses, asparagus, or vegetable-based dishes with lemon and herbs. Serve well chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and freshness. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a few minutes in the glass helps the wine open up aromatically, revealing more layers of fruit and stone.
Producer
Weingut Rings is a dynamic, family-run estate based in Freinsheim in the northern Pfalz, a region that has rapidly risen in reputation for characterful, terroir-expressive wines. Originally a mixed farm, the estate has evolved over the years into a highly focused, quality-driven winery, now run by the Rings brothers, who have gained recognition for their meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and commitment to organic farming. Their wines—especially Riesling and the increasingly celebrated red cuvées—have helped redefine the image of northern Pfalz as a source of serious, ageworthy wines with a distinctive mineral edge. With numerous accolades from German and international critics, Weingut Rings is now regarded as one of the leading, forward-thinking producers in the region, known for precision, authenticity, and a strong expression of place.
