Weingut Rings Riesling Annaberg Großes Gewächs 2022 is a strikingly precise, dry Riesling from one of the youngest GG sites in the Pfalz, already showing the class to stand beside the region’s greats. Perched above Kallstadt on the edge of the forest, Annaberg marries coolness and sun exposure with sandstone-rich soils to create a wine of tension, elegance and depth. Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale straw color with green highlights and a crystalline brightness that hints at its freshness and purity. The nose starts out tight, almost austere, with a distinctly chalky, stony impression and a touch of flinty reduction. With air, it unfolds beautifully: delicate blossom notes, white peach, a hint of quince and wild herbs, underpinned by a subtle, smoky-spicy nuance from the Annaberg site. On the palate, the wine is linear, precise and dry, with a firm, driving acidity that frames the fruit rather than overpowering it. White peach, citrus zest and quince are layered over a salty, mineral backbone, giving the wine both energy and depth. The texture is finely grained and almost powdery from the sandstone and chalk influence, leading into a very long, mouthwatering finish with a faint herbal and smoky echo. This 2022 Annaberg GG is built for the long haul: it is already compelling in its youth but will gain complexity and harmony over 8–15 years in the cellar.

Production
The Annaberg vineyard lies above Kallstadt in the northern Pfalz, directly at the forest edge, benefiting from cool air flows that slow ripening and preserve acidity. The soils are dominated by sandstone with a chalky substructure, giving excellent drainage and a distinct, saline-mineral profile in the wines. The old Riesling vines, planted in 1981, produce naturally low yields of concentrated, small berries. Grapes are harvested by hand, typically among the last parcels to be picked, allowing for extended physiological ripeness without excessive sugar accumulation. In the cellar, the fruit is handled gently, with careful sorting, slow pressing and a spontaneous or long, cool fermentation, often in a mix of stainless steel and large, neutral oak. Extended lees contact adds texture and finesse while preserving the crystalline character and precision that define Annaberg as a Großes Gewächs.

This Riesling Annaberg GG is a versatile partner for refined, subtly aromatic dishes. It shines with shellfish (oysters, scallops, langoustines), ceviche, sushi and sashimi, as well as steamed or grilled white fish with citrus or herb accents. It also pairs beautifully with fine poultry or veal in light, creamy sauces, asparagus dishes, and fresh goat’s cheese. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and minerality. When young, a short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up from its initial, slightly reductive, chalky restraint and reveal its floral, stone-fruited depth.
