Description

Weingut Rings Das Kreuz Rotweincuvée 2022 Magnum is the flagship red blend from one of the most dynamic estates in Germany’s Pfalz region. Crafted in a distinctly Bordelais spirit, it marries Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and the local St. Laurent to create a structured, cellar‑worthy wine with real character. Sourced from top parcels in the hot Freinsheim site “Schwarzes Kreuz,” this cuvée channels the depth and power of great Bordeaux while remaining unmistakably Pfalz in its precision and freshness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Das Kreuz Magnum shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a vibrant, youthful rim, hinting at both concentration and energy. The nose opens with dark, smoky accents reminiscent of smoked ham and grilled herbs, followed by layers of cassis, ripe black cherry and plum. Subtle notes of bitter chocolate, sweet tobacco, cedar and a touch of graphite emerge with air, underpinned by a fine, stony minerality. On the palate, this is full‑bodied and focused, with a firm, elegant tannin structure that feels present yet polished. Dark berry fruit—cassis, blackberry and black cherry—takes center stage, supported by cocoa, espresso and a gentle smokiness from well‑judged barrique aging. The acidity is fresh but balanced, giving the wine lift and length rather than sharpness. In Magnum format, the 2022 has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, cigar box and truffle while the tannins further soften.

Production
Das Kreuz is sourced from the “Schwarzes Kreuz” site near Freinsheim, one of the warmest and most highly regarded vineyards in the Pfalz. Here, sun‑drenched exposures and well‑draining, mineral‑rich soils give naturally ripe, concentrated grapes while preserving a fine, savory backbone. Yields are kept low and the fruit is harvested selectively, often by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy berries. In the cellar, the different varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and St. Laurent—are vinified with care, typically undergoing temperature‑controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, aroma and refined tannin. The wine is then matured in barriques, with oak thoughtfully integrated rather than dominant, allowing the dark fruit, spice and mineral notes to knit together into a seamless, ageworthy cuvée.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Pfalz red is an excellent partner for hearty, savory dishes. Think dry‑aged rib‑eye steak, roast lamb with herbs, braised beef cheeks, game dishes such as venison, or rich stews and ragùs. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, truffle dishes and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both depth and freshness. The 2022 benefits from air: in Magnum, decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the smoky, cassis‑driven aromatics and subtle tobacco and chocolate notes to fully unfold.

Producer
Weingut Rings, run by brothers Steffen and Andreas Rings, has become one of the standout names in the Pfalz, transforming from a solid family estate into a benchmark producer for ambitious, terroir‑driven wines. Located around Freinsheim, the winery benefits from a warm, dry climate and a mosaic of soils, ideal for both traditional German varieties and international grapes. Over the past two decades, the Rings brothers have earned a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, low yields and precise, characterful vinification, with Das Kreuz established as their red flagship. Frequently cited for its remarkable quality‑to‑price ratio and its ability to rival much pricier Bordeaux, this cuvée has helped cement Weingut Rings’ status as a leading force in modern German red wine.
