Description

Weingut Rings Das kleine Kreuz is a substantial Pfalz red cuvée from the Freinsheim site of Schwarzes Kreuz, made with the same care and attention as its more renowned namesake. Presented in a magnum, this 2023 blend combines St. Laurent, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in a generous, dry style.

Tasting Notes
The nose and palate bring together ripe cherry and blackcurrant with dark cocoa, a touch of green pepper and bay leaf, and hints of aged leather and vanilla. Full-bodied and savoury, it has sweet but still firm tannins and a long, powerful finish, balanced by fresh fruit and a distinctly dry, lightly spicy character. Its structure and youthful tannins suggest it can develop further in bottle over the next few years. The magnum format is also well suited to gradual maturation.

Production
The grapes come from warm gravel and sandy soils around Freinsheim. They are hand-harvested, carefully sorted again at the winery and destemmed before spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine matures for just under two years in small oak barrels, both new and used, and is bottled without prior filtration.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with grilled or roasted red meat, game, or a hearty mushroom dish. Give it an hour or so in a decanter to let its fruit and savoury spice open up, particularly while the tannins are still youthful.
