Description

Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Schlehdorn 2021 is the estate’s flagship dry Riesling from the heart of the renowned St. Nikolaus site in the Rheingau. Grown directly along the broad, one-kilometre-wide Rhine, this wine captures the full character of its riverside terroir and the extraordinary age of its vines. Schlehdorn is produced only from the oldest, most expressive parcels, making it one of the most distinctive interpretations of Rheingau Riesling available.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Schlehdorn shows a clear, bright lemon hue with green highlights, reflecting its precision and youthful energy. On the nose, it is finely etched and complex: expect notes of citrus zest, green and yellow apple, ripe stone fruit and subtle herbs, supported by stony, flinty minerality and a delicate hint of floral and spice. On the palate, this Riesling is tightly focused and linear, with a vibrant acidity that carries the fruit in a long, elegant arc. Citrus and orchard fruits mingle with nuances of white peach, crushed slate and a gentle saline edge from its proximity to the river. The texture is both firm and refined, with impressive depth and concentration coming from the 85+ year-old vines. The finish is long, precise and mineral-driven. Built for aging, this 2021 has the structure to develop beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining further complexity, smokiness and honeyed nuances with time in bottle.

Production
The Schlehdorn parcel lies in the VDP.Grosse Lage St. Nikolaus, directly on the banks of the Rhine in the Rheingau. Here, the broad river acts as both heat reservoir and sunlight reflector in spring, promoting an earlier budbreak, while autumn mists blanket the vines, delaying harvest and extending the growing season. This unique combination allows for exceptionally long, slow ripening, capturing full aromatic complexity without sacrificing freshness. The Riesling vines along the edge of a villa property at the lower part of the site are over 85 years old, yielding naturally low quantities of highly concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection. In the cellar, Weingut P.J. Kühn follows a minimal-intervention philosophy, typically with gentle pressing, native yeast fermentation and extended time on the lees, often in traditional large oak or neutral vessels, to preserve purity, terroir expression and textural finesse.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. Think freshwater fish (trout, zander, pike-perch), ceviche and sashimi, or elegant shellfish dishes such as scallops and prawns. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes, vegetable-based plates, white asparagus, and poultry with citrus or herb sauces. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11 °C, to allow the layers of fruit and minerality to unfold. Young bottles benefit from being opened a bit in advance, and a short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the 2021 show more complexity and aromatic width.

Producer
Weingut P.J. Kühn is one of the leading estates of the Rheingau and a benchmark for organically and biodynamically crafted Riesling in Germany. Over the years, Peter Jakob Kühn and family have earned a reputation for precision, depth and authenticity in their wines, helping to shape the Rheingau’s modern identity and earning high acclaim from critics and sommeliers worldwide.
