Weingut Markus Molitor’s Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese** Trocken is a striking dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated sites. It combines the richness of fully ripe fruit with the precision and tension that have made Molitor a benchmark producer in Germany, while the historic Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard adds real depth and pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant, polished appearance that hints at its concentration and energy. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe tropical fruit, stone fruit, and a distinct, almost electric mineral character that reflects the slate-driven soils of the vineyard. On the palate, the wine is focused and powerful, with generous ripe fruit quickly pulled into line by a firm, vibrant acidity. Despite the Auslese designation, it finishes dry, long, and precise, with excellent structure and the kind of complexity that suggests it will continue to evolve beautifully over the coming years.

Production
The grapes come from the steep slopes of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, one of Markus Molitor’s flagship vineyards, where ancient vines—some up to 100 years old—grow on a highly complex mix of mineral-rich soils and classic blue slate. The site’s dramatic incline towards the Mosel helps the fruit develop exceptional concentration and finesse. Harvested late in November, the grapes are partially affected by botrytis, adding nuance and complexity, then fermented with natural yeast and matured for one year in large neutral oak casks before bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that calls for food with depth and intensity, such as roast poultry, pork with rich sauces, veal, lobster, or dishes with mushrooms and umami-driven components. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to preserve its precision and aromatic complexity. Decanting is not essential, but a brief airing can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
