Description
Weingut Markus Molitor’s Bernkasteler Lay Auslese** Trocken is a striking Mosel Riesling that combines precision, intensity, and unmistakable slate-driven elegance. Coming from one of the region’s most celebrated producers, it reflects both the finesse of the Mosel and the depth that has made Markus Molitor a benchmark for serious German white wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale lemon in the glass, this wine typically shows a crystalline, vibrant appearance that hints at its precision. The nose is layered and expressive, with notes of citrus zest, green apple, white peach, and delicate floral tones, all carried by the classic cool, smoky minerality of Mosel slate.
On the palate, it is dry, focused, and energetic, balancing ripe orchard fruit and citrus with racy acidity and a salty, mineral edge. Despite the concentration suggested by the Auslese designation, the wine remains sleek and linear, with a long, elegant finish. It has excellent aging potential and should develop added complexity over time, with deeper honeyed, herbal, and petrol nuances emerging in bottle.
Production
Bernkasteler Lay is a steep slate site on the Mosel, where the vines benefit from excellent sun exposure and the cooling influence of the river, helping Riesling achieve ripeness while retaining freshness. Markus Molitor is known for meticulous vineyard work and selective harvesting, often vinifying parcels separately to preserve site character.
The wine is produced with a focus on purity and detail, typically using gentle pressing and slow, cool fermentation to emphasize finesse and terroir expression. The Auslese** Trocken designation points to exceptional ripeness and concentration, while the dry style keeps the wine taut and precise.
Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for dishes that can mirror its brightness and minerality, such as grilled sea bass, lobster, sushi, sashimi, roast chicken with herbs, or asparagus-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine and creamy cheeses. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short opening in the glass can help reveal its aromatics.
Producer
Weingut Markus Molitor is one of the Mosel’s most respected estates, widely admired for its uncompromising vineyard work and exceptional range of Rieslings from some of the region’s finest sites. The winery has built a strong reputation for crafting wines of remarkable precision, longevity, and site transparency.
Under Markus Molitor’s leadership, the estate has become a reference point for both dry and sweet Mosel Riesling, earning widespread critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts. Its focus on old-vine parcels, careful selection, and traditional craftsmanship has made it one of Germany’s standout producers.
