Description
Weingut Heid Lemberger Lämmler Großes Gewächs 2020 is a top-tier German red from one of Württemberg’s most renowned single vineyard sites. Sourced from the VDP.Große Lage Lämmler, this dry Lemberger (Blaufränkisch) unites power, freshness and precision in a distinctly cool-climate style. It’s a wine crafted for enthusiasts who appreciate depth, structure and terroir-driven character over overt fruit sweetness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a saturated, deep cherry-red hue with a vivid rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose opens with aromas of plum compote and preserved black cherries, wrapped in notes reminiscent of Christmas spices. As it unfolds, darker and cooler nuances emerge: dark chocolate, eucalyptus, green mint, sage and a touch of beeswax give the bouquet remarkable complexity and a slightly smoky, herbal edge.
On the palate, the Lämmler Großes Gewächs is fleshy yet precise, carried by a vibrant, refreshing acidity. The tannins are finely woven and supportive rather than dominant, reinforcing the juicy, cherry-driven core without ever feeling heavy. Completely dry in style, it avoids any hint of jammy or confected fruit, instead highlighting deep, cool flavors, dark berries, herbs and spice. The structure, freshness and concentration suggest very good aging potential: it will drink well now with a proper decant but should evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and polish.
Production
The grapes for this Großes Gewächs come from the VDP.Große Lage Lämmler, a steep, protected hillside with a south-eastern exposure rising to about 420 meters above sea level. The soils are dominated by weathered Keuper, reed sandstone and colorful marl, which contribute both power and minerality while preserving a cool, spicy profile in the Lemberger. The inclination of up to 60% necessitates careful, largely manual vineyard work and selective hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the focus is on a dry, terroir-expressive style: gentle extraction, spontaneous or carefully controlled fermentation, and maturation in wooden barrels (often a mix of used and possibly some new oak) allow the wine to gain structure, micro-oxygenation and aromatic complexity without masking its origin.
Food & Serving
This Lemberger is a versatile partner for hearty, aromatic dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast duck or goose, braised beef, venison, lamb, and game birds, as well as mushroom-based dishes and robust, herb-driven cuisine. Mature cheeses—especially hard cheeses and aged semi-hard styles—also work well with its structure and savory depth. Serve at 16–18 °C; for maximum expression, decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to let the tannins soften and the herbal, spicy nuances fully open up.
