Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright, pale to medium straw-yellow hue with youthful reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is surprisingly restrained for a full barrique-aged wine: discreet green and yellow orchard fruits—think just-ripe pear, green apple and a touch of white peach—are interwoven with fine smoky accents, a hint of toasted hazelnut and a whisper of vanilla and spice from the barrel, all wrapped in a cool, almost stony impression. On the palate, the wine is driven by a lively, fresh acidity that gives lift and tension to the warmer vintage fruit. The texture is sleek yet substantial, with a clear, linear structure framing flavors of crisp apple, lime zest, subtle citrus pith and a gentle nuttiness. The oak is finely integrated rather than dominant, adding depth and a soft, creamy undertone without weighing the wine down. The finish is long, clean and refreshingly saline, suggesting good aging potential over the next 4–7 years, during which the smoky, nutty nuances and tertiary complexity should gradually unfold.

Production
The Großwallstädter Kirchenstück vineyard lies on the banks of the Main in Franken, benefiting from a mix of mineral-rich soils and a temperate river-influenced climate that suits Chardonnay particularly well. For this cuvée, Philipp and Kilian Giegerich selected the finest parcels and harvested by hand to ensure meticulous sorting and optimal ripeness in the slightly warmer 2022 vintage. Fermentation and full maturation took place in barriques, with careful management of lees contact and bâtonnage to build texture and complexity while keeping the oak in balance. Because the separate Chardonnay Reserve was not produced in 2022, all of the top barrels were blended into this single Kirchenstück bottling, effectively elevating its quality and depth beyond a typical site wine.

This refined Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside grilled or pan-seared fish, roasted poultry, veal scaloppine, creamy risottos and dishes featuring mushrooms or light cream sauces. It also pairs beautifully with mild to medium-intense soft cheeses and delicately spiced vegetable dishes. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic precision.
