Description
Weingut Gerhard Wohlmuth’s Gelber Muskateller Phylit 2024 is a bright, floral, and finely spiced expression of one of Styria’s most characterful grape varieties. Sourced from selected vineyards in Kitzeck-Sausal, it shows both the aromatic lift Muskateller is loved for and the precision that comes from high-altitude vineyards and careful winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a pale, luminous white with an inviting freshness. The nose is intensely aromatic, opening with white lilies, elderflower, peach, and light tropical fruit, followed by gooseberry and lime. On the palate, it is juicy and energetic, yet marked by a refined creaminess that gives the wine real presence.
Flavors of ripe pear, elderflower, mint, and dried lime leaf are layered with citrus oil and a subtle green pepper note. The finish is clean, vibrant, and highly expressive, making this a textbook Gelber Muskateller. Best enjoyed young for its aromatic purity, though it should hold well over the next couple of years.
Production
The fruit comes from several vineyards near Kitzeck, lying at 380 to 650 meters above sea level on steep slopes with inclinations of up to 80%. The southwest-facing sites are planted on red and black slate with quartz, a terroir that helps preserve freshness while adding tension and mineral detail. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October and carefully selected before vinification.
A short skin maceration is used to draw out aroma and flavor before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks at 24°C, and the wine then matures for six months on fine lees, which contributes to its subtle creamy texture without softening its lively character.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile aperitif wine, but it also pairs beautifully with light Asian dishes, fresh salads, goat cheese, white fish, and seafood with herbs or citrus. Serve chilled at around 8-10°C to highlight its aromatic profile and crisp structure. Decanting is not necessary; in fact, the wine is best enjoyed fresh and vibrant straight from the bottle.
