Description
Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Nonnenberg 2022 is a finely etched, single-vineyard Rheingau Riesling from one of Germany’s most admired estates. Sourced exclusively from the steep, south-facing Nonnenberg site above Rüdesheim, it captures the crystalline precision and tension that have made Breuer a benchmark for dry Riesling. With only a small number of bottles produced each year, this is a coveted wine for collectors and serious Riesling lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Nonnenberg shows a pale lemon hue with silvery highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and mineral backbone. The nose opens with vivid aromas of lemon zest, white peach and green apple, followed by layers of lime blossom, crushed slate, and a touch of wild herbs. Subtle notes of white flowers and a faint saline edge underline its cool-climate origins.
On the palate, this Riesling is laser-focused and dry, with a taut, mouth-watering acidity that drives pure citrus and stone-fruit flavors. Think Meyer lemon, grapefruit pith, ripe pear, and white nectarine, wrapped around a finely chiseled mineral core. The texture is both delicate and structured, with impressive length and a lingering finish of citrus oils, wet stone, and gentle spice. Still at the beginning of its evolution, the 2022 Nonnenberg already offers plenty of pleasure but will reward patience; expect it to develop more complexity, honeyed nuances, and tertiary notes over 10–15 years and beyond, under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Nonnenberg is Georg Breuer’s iconic monopole vineyard, a steep, south- to southwest-facing hillside of weathered slate, quartzite, and loess soils above Rüdesheim in the Rheingau. This poor, stony terroir naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor, while the exposure ensures excellent ripening and cool nights preserve acidity. The Riesling grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place with indigenous yeasts in large traditional oak casks and/or stainless steel, at controlled, relatively cool temperatures to retain purity and finesse. The wine is then allowed to rest on its fine lees, gaining texture and depth before bottling, with minimal intervention to faithfully express the character of Nonnenberg and the vintage.
Food & Serving
This dry, structured Rheingau Riesling is an outstanding partner for refined, aromatic cuisine. Try it with grilled or poached white fish, sashimi, ceviche, scallops, and shellfish, or alongside classic German dishes such as trout with herbs, schnitzel with lemon, or delicate poultry preparations. It also pairs beautifully with Asian-inspired dishes featuring citrus, ginger, or lemongrass, and with soft goat cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not icy, at around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to let the aromatics unfold. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up and reveal more of its layered complexity.
Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer is one of the leading estates in the Rheingau and a driving force behind the renaissance of top-quality, dry German Riesling. Founded in the late 19th century and brought to international prominence by the late Bernhard Breuer, the winery has long championed terroir-driven, age-worthy wines from steep, historic vineyards along the Rhine. Today, the Breuer family continues this vision with meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and a thoughtful, minimalist approach in the cellar. Nonnenberg, their prestigious monopole site, has become a reference point for serious Rheingau Riesling and a symbol of the estate’s commitment to expressing the pure, uncompromising character of its unique vineyards.
