Description
Weingut Eymann Ménage à trois Toreye Bio 2018 is a charming Pfalz white blend that brings together three classic Burgundy grapes—Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc—in a beautifully balanced, organically crafted cuvée. In a warm, challenging vintage, this wine stands out for its freshness, precision and poise. Careful harvesting, élevage in large wooden casks and extended lees aging have created a wine that is at once juicy, textured and delightfully easy to drink, with a distinctly Pfalz personality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a clear, bright straw-yellow hue with subtle golden reflections, hinting at both ripeness and concentration. The nose is immediately inviting, with a typical Burgundian profile: ripe pear leads the aromatics, supported by notes of yellow stone fruit such as mirabelle and apricot, along with gentle floral hints and a touch of nut and baked apple from the time in wood and on the lees.
On the palate, Ménage à trois is all about harmony and flow. Juicy fruit and a fine, creamy texture from the lees aging are lifted by a well-judged, precise acidity that keeps the wine lively and refreshing despite the warm vintage. The mid-palate feels generous and smooth, with a subtle, rounded extract sweetness that lingers on the finish without ever becoming heavy. It drinks beautifully now but has the structure to evolve for another 3–5 years, gaining a bit more nutty complexity and integration while retaining its core of fruit.
Production
The grapes for Ménage à trois Toreye Bio come from organically farmed vineyards in the Pfalz, where a mild climate and abundant sunshine are tempered by cool nights and protective forested hills. The soils, typically a mix of loam, limestone and sandstone, provide both ripeness and mineral tension, ideal for Burgundy varieties. Harvest is carried out selectively, often by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness without excess sugar, which is especially critical in warmer years. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented and matured in large traditional wooden casks, rather than small barriques, preserving purity of fruit while adding subtle structure. A long period of aging on the lees (Hefelager) follows, with occasional bâtonnage, building texture, depth and that fine, creamy mouthfeel while maintaining a clean, precise profile.
Food & Serving
This versatile Pfalz white pairs wonderfully with a wide range of dishes. Try it with roast chicken, veal schnitzel, pork tenderloin or creamy pasta with mushrooms to echo its texture and gentle richness. It also shines with salmon, trout, scallops and other richer fish preparations, as well as soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert or mild goat cheese. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its freshness and aromatics while allowing the texture and fruit to express fully. A short decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine open up and reveal more of its pear and stone-fruit complexity.
