Description

Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Halenberg Großes Gewächs 2022 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered grand cru sites. Sourced from the steep, south-facing Halenberg vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs delivers immense precision, mineral tension and quiet depth rather than showy opulence. It’s a wine that speaks softly at first, but reveals remarkable complexity and detail with time in the glass and years in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Halenberg GG shows a pale, shimmering straw-yellow with green reflections, hinting at youth and energy. The nose is initially restrained and finely etched: delicate notes of white peach, lime zest and green apple are interwoven with subtle herbal tones—think lemon balm and verbena—alongside a cool, stony reduction reminiscent of wet flint and smoky blue slate. With air, more layers emerge: hints of white blossom, grapefruit pith and a faint saline edge. On the palate, the wine is laser-precise and tightly focused, carried by a racy but perfectly ripe acidity. The fruit profile leans toward citrus and stone fruit—lime, grapefruit and crunchy nectarine—wrapped in a firm, linear structure. The hallmark Halenberg smokiness and a vivid, salty-mineral backbone run through the mid-palate, giving a sense of grip and depth without any heaviness. The finish is long, dry and persistent, leaving echoes of citrus peel, crushed stone and fine herbs. While already impressive in its finesse, the 2022 is clearly built for aging, with the potential to develop greater aromatic complexity—petrol nuance, honeyed tones and deeper spice—over 10–15 years or more under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The Halenberg vineyard is one of the Nahe’s great terroirs: a dramatically steep slope of up to 70% incline, fully south-facing, capturing maximum sunshine while benefiting from cool night-time temperatures. The soils are dominated by blue slate and hard quartzite, extremely stony and poor in nutrients, forcing the deep-rooted Riesling vines to work hard and yielding naturally low quantities of intensely aromatic, small berries. Emrich-Schönleber harvests this site by hand in multiple selective passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are chosen for the Grosses Gewächs. In the cellar, the Riesling is gently pressed and fermented with a measured, often partial use of natural yeasts in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, at controlled temperatures to preserve nuance and freshness. The wine then rests on its fine lees, gaining texture, polish and complexity without losing the crystalline purity that defines Halenberg.

Food & Serving
This Halenberg Großes Gewächs is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. It shines with high-quality seafood—think turbot, sole, scallops or langoustines—especially when prepared with citrus, fennel or light beurre blanc. It also pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or delicately spiced Asian dishes, such as steamed fish with ginger and spring onion, as well as fine poultry, veal in light cream sauces, or vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, artichoke and fresh herbs. Serve at 9–11 °C in a generous white wine glass. Decanting is recommended for young bottles—30 to 60 minutes will help the restrained nose to open and allow the wine’s complexity and fine smokiness to fully unfold.

Producer
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is a family-run estate based in Monzingen on the Nahe, widely regarded as one of Germany’s leading Riesling producers. Over generations, the family has painstakingly assembled and nurtured top parcels in some of the region’s finest steep-slope vineyards, notably Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. Their focus has long been on expressing these distinctive sites with clarity and precision through meticulous vineyard work, low yields and thoughtful, minimally interventionist winemaking. Consistently lauded by German and international critics alike, Emrich-Schönleber has helped cement the Nahe’s reputation for world-class, terroir-driven dry Rieslings, with their Grosses Gewächs bottlings regularly counted among the very best in the country.
