Description
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Frühlingsplätzchen Großes Gewächs 2021 is a poised, dry Nahe Riesling from one of Germany’s most coveted grand cru sites. As a VDP.Großes Gewächs, it represents the estate’s pinnacle of dry wine production, combining crystalline precision with real depth and complexity. Sourced from the famed Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard in Monzingen, this bottling captures the cool elegance and mineral drive that have made Emrich-Schönleber a reference point for serious Riesling collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen GG is pale straw with green highlights, signaling its youth and tension. The nose opens with finely etched aromas of lime zest, white grapefruit, and crunchy green apple, layered with white peach, fresh herbs, and a distinct flinty, wet-stone minerality. Subtle floral notes—think white blossom and a hint of chamomile—add lift and delicacy.
On the palate, this is taut, dry and intensely focused, with a beautifully vibrant acidity that drives the wine from start to finish. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors are wrapped around a saline, almost salty core, giving the wine both energy and precision. The mid-palate is compact yet deeply flavored, with notes of lime, white peach, and a whisper of red currant, leading into a long, finely etched, mineral-laden finish. Still tightly coiled in this youthful stage, the 2021 has excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, it should evolve gracefully over 10–15 years or more, gaining texture, complexity, and a more expansive, smoky-mineral character.
Production
The Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard in Monzingen is one of the Nahe’s great sites, characterized by steep slopes with predominantly red slate and sandstone soils that warm quickly and drain well, yielding wines of lifted aromatics and incisive minerality. Emrich-Schönleber farm these parcels meticulously, with careful canopy management and low yields, and the Riesling is harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. Vinification is deliberately gentle and traditional: the grapes undergo a light pressing, followed by a spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts, typically in a mix of stainless steel and large, neutral wooden casks. Extended time on the fine lees adds texture and complexity without sacrificing the wine’s hallmark clarity and precision.
Food & Serving
This Frühlingsplätzchen Großes Gewächs pairs beautifully with refined seafood and lighter, high-quality dishes that echo its precision and minerality. Think oysters, scallop carpaccio, ceviche, grilled sea bass, or poached turbot, as well as sushi and sashimi. It also works superbly with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goat cheese, veal or poultry in citrus-herb sauces, and vegetable-focused dishes such as asparagus, fennel, or artichoke preparations where many wines struggle. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C. In its youth, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes can help the aromatics unfurl; for bottles with more age, gentle pouring and a larger white wine glass are all you need.
Producer
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is a family-run estate based in Monzingen on the Nahe, widely regarded as one of Germany’s top addresses for world-class Riesling. Over generations—most recently under Werner and Frank Schönleber—the winery has painstakingly focused on expressing the unique character of its steep, slate- and quartz-rich vineyards, particularly Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. As a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Emrich-Schönleber has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of the Nahe, earning consistently high scores and international recognition for both dry Großes Gewächs and noble-sweet wines. Their meticulous vineyard work, restrained, terroir-driven winemaking, and remarkable consistency have made them a benchmark producer for serious Riesling enthusiasts worldwide.
