Description
Wayfarer Estate’s Fort Ross-Seaview Pinot Noir Library Vertical 2016–2019 is a rare chance to explore four distinct vintages from one of California’s most compelling cool-climate sites. Released in very limited quantities directly from the cellar, this six-bottle set captures the evolution, nuance, and aging potential that have made Wayfarer a benchmark for serious Pinot Noir collectors.
Tasting Notes
This vertical showcases just how dramatically Pinot Noir can express vintage conditions. The 2016 is deep and brooding, with forest floor, umami, and raw leather layered over black berries and star anise; the 2017 is richer and more generous, delivering silky tannins, cherry, blueberry, and strawberry jam with accents of chocolate and orange peel. The 2018 turns more lifted and floral, with lavender, violet, red berries, pomegranate, and ripe cranberry, while the 2019 feels the most structured and serious, combining marionberry, blood orange, baking spice, rose petals, dark fruit, and a touch of dark chocolate. Across the range, these wines show excellent depth and balance, with the older wines already developing complexity and the 2018–2019 vintages poised for further aging.
Production
Sourced from the cool, windswept Fort Ross-Seaview appellation on the Sonoma Coast, Wayfarer’s vineyards benefit from a long growing season, coastal fog, and rocky soils that naturally limit yields and build concentration. The result is Pinot Noir with both power and precision, shaped by a maritime terroir that preserves acidity while encouraging aromatic detail. This special release was selected from the producer’s cellar and bottled as a limited library vertical, offering a rare look at how the estate’s wines evolve in bottle over time.
Food & Serving
This set is ideal alongside refined dishes such as duck breast, roast quail, wild mushroom risotto, herb-crusted lamb, or seared salmon. Serve at 15–16°C and, especially for the older 2016 bottles, consider a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes to help the aromatics open; the younger 2018 and 2019 wines can also benefit from brief aeration. If possible, taste the vintages side by side to fully appreciate the differences in texture, structure, and expression.
Producer
Wayfarer is the estate brand of Pahlmeyer in Sonoma’s Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, a region celebrated for producing some of California’s finest cool-climate Pinot Noir. Under the guidance of Cleo Pahlmeyer, the winery has built a strong reputation for precision farming and polished, site-driven wines that reflect the rugged coastal landscape. Wayfarer’s Pinot Noirs are widely admired for their depth, elegance, and aging potential, making this cellar release especially noteworthy for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
