Description
Wagner-Stempel Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2023 is a dry oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc from Rheinhessen with elderflower, green herbs, apple and vanilla spice. This is the Siefersheim side of Sauvignon Blanc. It has the grape’s green snap, plus the rounded feel of a Reserve bottling. The result is bright, dry and quietly creamy.
About the Wine
Wagner-Stempel Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2023 comes from Siefersheim in Rheinhessen, a village that gives this wine a more stony feel than many broader Rheinhessen Sauvignon Blancs. The vineyard soils listed for this bottling are quartzite, slate and loess, and that mix suits a wine built on green detail rather than simple fruit sweetness. The estate farms with sustainable certification, and the dry style keeps the focus on herbs, apple skin and elderflower. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine stays in a clear and measured frame. The Reserve name matters here, since this is the more textured Sauvignon Blanc in the Wagner-Stempel range.
In the cellar, the wine receives oak aging with a clear influence on aroma and shape. You can feel that in the vanilla note, the rounded middle and the gentle grip around the finish. The oak does not hide the grape’s green bell pepper and grass tones. It gives them a polished edge and adds a faint creaminess behind the apple and elderflower. The 2023 vintage carries lively acidity, and the dry finish has a clean herbal line. The wine lands with a mix of green spice, citrus peel and a light oak sweetness.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with elderflower, green bell pepper and cut grass, then moves toward apple, banana and a small touch of tropical fruit. Oak is easy to spot here, with vanilla and a lightly toasted edge that sits around the fruit rather than over it. The palate is dry, lively and medium-bodied, with the 12.5% alcohol keeping the wine fresh and direct. Apple skin, herb stem and green citrus run through the finish, and the Reserve texture gives the 2023 Wagner-Stempel Sauvignon Blanc a broader feel than a stainless-steel style. Drink 2024-2027.
Food Pairing
Pour this with grilled sea bass, lemon butter and parsley, where the wine’s apple and herb notes meet the fish cleanly. It is also strong with prawns, scallops or a seafood salad that has fennel, cucumber and a little citrus dressing. For cheese, choose fresh goat cheese or a warm goat cheese salad with walnuts and green leaves, since the wine has enough acidity for the cream and enough oak spice for the toast. A regional idea is Rheinhessen Spundekäs with radishes and pretzel, especially if the dip has chives or spring onion. For vegetables, try asparagus, grilled courgette or a salad with green herbs and apple slices.
Producer
Wagner-Stempel is one of the names that changed how many people look at Siefersheim, a small village on the western side of Rheinhessen. The estate is closely linked with stony hillside vineyards around the village, and its wines often feel more mineral and driven than the softer image once attached to the region. Daniel Wagner is the figure most drinkers associate with the modern estate, and his dry wines have helped make Siefersheim feel like a place with its own voice. This Sauvignon Blanc Reserve shows a different side of that same focus, since it takes an international grape and gives it the firm Siefersheim outline of herbs, apple and stone. The estate’s strength is detail rather than volume, and even this oak-aged Reserve keeps a clean line through the finish. In a bottle like this, Wagner-Stempel treats Sauvignon Blanc with the same seriousness as its better-known Rieslings, with texture, dryness and a clear sense of place.
