Description
Voerzio Dolcetto d'Alba Priavino 2023 is a beautifully crafted red from one of Piemonte’s most respected modernists, Roberto Voerzio. This is Dolcetto elevated: a serious, vineyard-focused expression that goes far beyond the everyday trattoria red while remaining utterly drinkable. Sourced from the Priavino vineyard in the heart of Langhe, it shows the purity, precision and depth that have made Voerzio a reference name in Barolo and beyond.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Priavino Dolcetto d’Alba shines with a deep ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is vibrant and expressive, offering an enticing mix of black cherry, wild blackberry and ripe plum, layered with violet, fresh herbs, a touch of almond and subtle spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet impressively intense, with juicy dark fruit, crunchy red berries and a characteristic Dolcetto bitter-cherry note that adds complexity rather than hardness. Fine, ripe tannins and lifted acidity give it a delightful freshness and a clean, dry finish, with accents of licorice, cocoa and a faint mineral edge. While crafted to drink beautifully in its youth, this Dolcetto has enough structure and concentration to evolve nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining extra softness and aromatic nuance.
Production
Priavino is a carefully tended Dolcetto vineyard on the hills around La Morra in Piemonte, where calcareous clay and marl soils, good elevation and excellent exposure help deliver ripe, aromatic fruit with natural freshness. Roberto Voerzio is renowned for extremely low yields, meticulous green harvesting and hand-picking at optimal ripeness to ensure only the healthiest, most concentrated grapes make it into the winery. Vinification typically follows a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the grape’s vivid fruit and floral character, with careful extraction of tannins. The wine is then aged—often in steel or neutral vessels—allowing Dolcetto’s pure, unmasked personality to shine without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Dolcetto is a superb partner for rustic Italian fare and everyday gourmet cooking alike. Pair it with charcuterie, salumi, tajarin pasta with ragù, mushroom risotto, oven-roasted chicken, grilled sausages, pizza with artisanal toppings or semi-aged cheeses like Taleggio and Fontina. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and structure; a brief 20–30 minute opening or a quick splash in a decanter will help the aromas bloom, especially in its first couple of years.
Producer
Roberto Voerzio is one of the most acclaimed producers in Barolo, known for his obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and his commitment to ultra-low yields and precise, clean winemaking. Based in La Morra, he helped redefine what was possible for Nebbiolo and other local varieties, crafting wines that are both powerful and refined, with a remarkable sense of place. While his Barolos are world-famous, wines like Dolcetto d’Alba Priavino show his philosophy applied to everyday Piedmontese varieties, offering outstanding quality and character. Voerzio’s work has earned him a reputation as a benchmark producer in the Langhe and a key figure in the region’s rise to international prominence.
