Description

Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2018 is a benchmark expression of modern Barolo from one of the region’s most exacting artisans, Roberto Voerzio. Sourced from the high, breezy La Serra cru in La Morra, this Nebbiolo marries profound depth with perfume and finesse. In a classical, structured vintage like 2018, La Serra shows its trademark elegance, offering a Barolo that is both age‑worthy and remarkably detailed.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 La Serra is a radiant, medium garnet with a translucent core and the characteristic Nebbiolo brick hue emerging at the rim. The nose is immediately seductive: lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange intertwine with rose petals, violet, licorice, sweet spices, and hints of tar, dried herbs and cedar. As it opens, subtle notes of tobacco leaf, anise and crushed stone add complexity. On the palate, this Barolo is precise, vertical and finely etched, with an energetic backbone of acidity that carries pure red fruit across the tongue. Silky yet firm tannins frame flavors of red currant, sour cherry, pomegranate and orange zest, layered with nuances of fennel seed, tea leaf, leather and a mineral, saline edge from the La Serra terroir. The finish is long, fragrant and mouthwatering, promising excellent evolution in bottle. While already expressive with proper aeration, this 2018 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining more truffle, forest floor and savory complexity over time.

Production
La Serra is one of La Morra’s highest and most prized crus, characterized by marly, calcareous soils and a cooler, breezy exposition that naturally favors elegance, aromatic lift and refined tannins in Nebbiolo. Roberto Voerzio is renowned for obsessive low yields: severe green harvesting, dense planting and meticulous bunch selection ensure only perfectly ripe grapes reach the winery. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture ideal ripeness and preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, fermentation occurs in temperature‑controlled tanks with careful cap management to extract fine tannins and pure fruit rather than harsh bitterness. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak (often a proportion of barriques and larger vessels), carefully balanced to add texture and subtle spice without masking the cru’s signature floral and mineral character, before resting in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2018 shines alongside refined, savory dishes that echo its complexity and structure: think braised veal shank, ossobuco, slow‑cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, or classic Piemontese specialties such as tajarin with white truffle, brasato al Barolo or mushroom‑rich risottos. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Grana Padano or Castelmagno also make superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. For current drinking, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and fully unfurl the wine’s floral and spicy bouquet; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Roberto Voerzio, based in La Morra in the heart of Barolo, is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the region’s quality revolution. Since the 1980s, he has championed an extreme focus on vine health, very low yields and meticulous vineyard work to craft Nebbiolo of exceptional concentration, purity and finesse. Working almost exclusively with top crus such as La Serra, Brunate and Rocche dell’Annunziata, Voerzio has helped redefine what Barolo from La Morra can be—aromatic, refined yet deeply structured and long‑lived. His micro‑production, artisanal approach and unwavering standards have earned the estate a cult following among collectors and sommeliers worldwide, and his single‑vineyard Barolos are consistently counted among the most coveted wines of Piemonte.
