Description

Voerzio Barolo Brunate 2018 is an expressive, finely detailed interpretation of one of Barolo’s most revered crus, crafted by the legendary Roberto Voerzio. This is Nebbiolo at its most refined: intensely perfumed, structurally precise, and impeccably polished. Sourced from the Brunate vineyard in La Morra, it combines the power of great Barolo with an almost Burgundian sense of finesse, offering both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Brunate shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, classic for Nebbiolo but with a striking clarity and brightness. The nose is captivating and layered: rose petals, violet and dried flowers lead, supported by notes of wild strawberry, red cherry, blood orange zest, and hints of anise, sandalwood, tobacco leaf, and subtle sweet spice from aging in oak. On the palate, this Barolo is precise and finely etched rather than overtly massive, reflecting the more elegant nature of the 2018 vintage. Silky yet assertive tannins frame flavors of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and cranberry, intertwined with savory notes of dried herbs, licorice, tea leaf, and a whisper of truffle and tar. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and a long, tapering finish with lingering floral and mineral tones. While already approachable with air, it has the structure to evolve beautifully for 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes over time.

Production
The Brunate vineyard in La Morra is one of Barolo’s grandest sites, a south to southwest–facing amphitheater of calcareous clay and marl that naturally delivers perfume, depth, and elegance. Roberto Voerzio is renowned for his obsessive work in the vines, with extremely low yields achieved through severe green harvesting and meticulous selection, ensuring only the most concentrated, pristine Nebbiolo berries make it into the cellar. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before a long, temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration designed to extract fine tannins and aromatic nuance rather than harshness. Aging takes place in a combination of French barriques (a portion new) and larger oak vessels, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity while preserving the purity of fruit and the distinctive Brunate character.

Food & Serving
Voerzio Barolo Brunate 2018 pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that match its depth without overwhelming its finesse. Think braised beef short ribs, osso buco, roasted lamb, game birds, or rich mushroom dishes, as well as truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large, Burgundy-style or Barolo glasses to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl. Decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the layers of perfume; with more bottle age, a shorter, gentler decant will suffice to remove sediment and awaken the wine.

Producer
Roberto Voerzio is one of Piedmont’s most respected and influential modern Barolo producers, based in La Morra at the heart of the appellation. Since founding his estate in the 1980s, he has become renowned for his uncompromisingly low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and a philosophy that combines modern precision with deep respect for terroir. His holdings include some of the most prized crus in Barolo—such as Brunate, Cerequio, and Rocche dell’Annunziata—and his wines are sought after worldwide for their concentration, purity, and remarkable balance. Over the decades, Roberto Voerzio has helped redefine what Barolo can be: powerful yet incredibly elegant, capable of long aging but also rivetingly expressive even in its youth, solidifying his status as a benchmark producer in the region.
