Description

Vodopivec Vitovska 2019 is a benchmark orange wine from the wild, windswept limestone plateau of the Carso in Friuli, Italy. Crafted from the native Vitovska grape, it is a deeply characterful, textural wine that speaks clearly of its place of origin rather than fashion or trend. Long regarded as one of the reference producers for skin‑contact whites in Italy, Vodopivec has helped elevate Vitovska from local curiosity to a serious, ageworthy wine for purist palates.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vodopivec Vitovska 2019 shows a glowing deep golden to amber hue, with a gentle haze that reflects its minimal‑intervention upbringing. The nose is immediately distinctive: scents of dried apricot, candied citrus peel and wild herbs mingle with notes of chamomile, crushed stone, beeswax and a subtle saline breeze from the nearby Adriatic. On the palate, this is a structured, textural orange wine with firm but refined tannins from extended skin contact. Flavors of preserved lemon, orange zest, dried pear and quince unfold alongside nuances of hay, tea leaves, almond skin and wet rock. A vibrant, almost saline acidity keeps everything taut and focused, giving the wine impressive length and a slightly savory, mouthwatering finish. Built to evolve, the 2019 vintage has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for 8–12 years from release, gaining more complexity, nuttiness and tertiary notes over time.

Production
Grown in the rugged Carso subzone of Friuli, Vodopivec’s Vitovska vines are rooted in thin, red iron‑rich soils over hard limestone, a terroir that naturally produces low yields and high character. Farming is painstaking and essentially artisanal, with organic, low‑intervention methods and manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are picked. In classic Vodopivec style, the grapes undergo extended maceration on the skins, often in neutral vessels such as large casks or clay amphorae, to build texture, extract tannin and deepen aromatics. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, and the wine is aged on its lees for an extended period before bottling with minimal additions, allowing Vitovska and the Karst landscape to speak clearly in the glass.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic wine that shines at the table, especially with dishes that can stand up to its structure and savory profile. Think raw and marinated seafood, grilled octopus, shellfish stews, risotto with herbs, wild mushrooms, roast poultry, pork with fennel, aged cheeses and Mediterranean vegetable dishes featuring olive oil and aromatic herbs. Serve slightly cooler than a red, around 13–15°C (55–59°F), to highlight both its freshness and texture. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly in its youth, to let the aromatics open and the tannins knit, and don’t hesitate to enjoy it in a Burgundy or larger white‑wine glass for full expression.

Producer
Vodopivec is a small, fiercely quality‑driven estate in the Carso (Kras) area of Friuli‑Venezia Giulia, and one of the leading names in the revival of Vitovska and skin‑contact whites in Italy. Established by the Vodopivec family with a clear focus on expressing the unique limestone and wind‑swept terroir of the Carso, the winery has become a touchstone for serious orange‑wine enthusiasts worldwide. Working with low yields, traditional methods, native grapes and minimal intervention in the cellar, Vodopivec has helped demonstrate that Vitovska can produce profoundly complex, ageworthy wines, earning the estate a reputation as a reference point for authentic, terroir‑driven winemaking in the region.
