Description
Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus 2022 is a refined white Burgundy from one of Meursault’s most coveted Premier Cru parcels, set just above the renowned Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. Old-vine Chardonnay and classic Girardin craftsmanship combine to deliver a wine of precision, depth, and unmistakable Côte de Beaune character. This cuvée showcases the generous, nutty richness Meursault is famous for, balanced by a finely etched mineral backbone.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Les Charmes-Dessus shows a luminous straw-gold hue with green reflections, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe stone fruits and pineapple mingle with notes of lemon cream, acacia blossom, and a touch of honey, framed by subtle toasted hazelnut, fennel seed, and a delicate hint of spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, it is full and textural yet superbly balanced, with a dense, mouthcoating core of ripe Chardonnay fruit lifted by vibrant acidity and a saline, chalky minerality. Flavors of white peach, baked apple, citrus zest, and a light malted, buttery nuance unfold gradually, leading into a long, precise finish with fine oak integration and lingering spice. While already approachable in its youth for its generous fruit and texture, this Premier Cru has excellent aging potential; under good cellar conditions it should develop added complexity, nougat and truffle notes, and greater harmony over 8–12 years or more.
Production
Les Charmes-Dessus lies on the southern stretch of the Côte de Beaune, on clay- and limestone-rich soils that give Meursault its hallmark combination of richness and minerality. The Chardonnay vines here are notably old – around 65 years – naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly healthy fruit arrives at the press. They are then gently pressed at low pressure to encourage a slow, fine extraction of juice. Fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic, takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in traditional 228-liter Burgundian oak barrels, with around 20% new wood to provide structure and subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine is matured for about 16 months on fine lees, gaining texture and aromatic depth, before a light filtration and bottling timed according to the lunar calendar on a favorable “fruit day” to preserve purity and vibrancy.
Food & Serving
This Meursault 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, and roasted poultry with morels or truffled jus. It also shines alongside creamy risottos, monkfish, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and minerality without muting the texture. In its youth, decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures, a gentle splash-decant just before service is sufficient.
Producer
Maison Vincent Girardin, established in the 1980s, has become one of the key names in the Côte de Beaune, known for an exacting, terroir-driven approach to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Initially a small domaine, the estate expanded through meticulous vineyard selection, with a strong focus on top sites in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and surrounding villages. Over time, Girardin moved towards more sustainable and minimalist practices in both vineyard and cellar, emphasizing lower yields, careful picking decisions, and restrained use of oak. Today the wines are regarded as benchmarks for contemporary white Burgundy: pure, textural and precise, with Les Charmes-Dessus standing out as one of the house’s flagship expressions of Meursault Premier Cru terroir.
