Description

Villa Russiz Sauvignon de la Tour 2023 is a vibrant, finely crafted Italian white that showcases the pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc from Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This cuvée balances aromatic intensity with elegant structure, making it as compelling for serious wine lovers as it is approachable for casual enjoyment. Named “de la Tour” in homage to the historic estate and its iconic villa, it reflects over a century of winemaking tradition refined by modern precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Villa Russiz Sauvignon de la Tour 2023 displays a bright, pale straw-yellow colour with glints of green, signaling freshness and youthful energy. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: notes of elderflower, wild herbs, and citrus zest mingle with hints of gooseberry, green apple, and subtle tropical nuances like passion fruit and grapefruit. Underneath the primary fruit, you can often pick up mineral and flinty undertones that are a hallmark of Friuli’s top Sauvignon Blancs. On the palate, this wine is crisp and medium-bodied, with a lively, linear acidity that keeps everything taut and refreshing. Flavours of lime, grapefruit, white peach, and crunchy pear are framed by a delicate herbal character—think fresh sage and nettle—along with a saline, mineral edge that stretches through the finish. The texture is polished rather than creamy, emphasizing precision over opulence. While it is absolutely delicious now in its youth, the wine has the structure to evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more roundness and complexity while maintaining its vibrant core.

Production
Sauvignon de la Tour is sourced from estate vineyards in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, one of Italy’s most esteemed regions for crisp, aromatic whites. Here, a combination of Ponca soils (marl and sandstone), good elevation, and pronounced diurnal temperature shifts give Sauvignon Blanc excellent aromatic lift and natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches are selected, often in the cooler hours of the day to preserve freshness. After gentle pressing, the must is clarified at low temperatures, then fermented in stainless steel at controlled, cool temperatures to lock in delicate aromatics and fruit purity. The wine is usually aged on fine lees in tank for a short period, adding subtle texture and complexity without masking the varietal character.

Food & Serving
Villa Russiz Sauvignon de la Tour 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside seafood such as grilled prawns, oysters, seared scallops, and delicate white fish, as well as vegetable-based dishes like asparagus risotto, goat cheese salads, and fresh spring vegetables. It pairs beautifully with sushi, ceviche, and light pasta dishes featuring herbs, lemon, or seasonal greens. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its aromatic intensity and crisp structure. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the bouquet to fully unfold in the glass.

Producer
Founded in the late 19th century, Villa Russiz is a historic estate in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, long recognized as a benchmark producer for the region’s elegant, terroir-driven white wines. The estate was originally created by Count Théodore de la Tour and his wife Elvine Ritter de Zahony, and it quickly gained a reputation for quality and innovation in the Collio area. Over the years, Villa Russiz has become known for its meticulous vineyard work and its refined expressions of international and native varieties, especially Sauvignon Blanc. Today, it stands as an important ambassador for Friulian wine, with numerous accolades and critical recognition underscoring its role in defining the region’s modern, world-class white wine style.
