Description
Villa Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino Pomona 2018 is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese Grosso that captures the purest character of Montalcino. Drawn from a carefully selected “cru” within the estate’s 20 hectares, it represents the most distinctive soils and exposure on the property. Dedicated to Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and abundance who has graced the estate’s labels since 1979, this wine is both a tribute to tradition and a step forward in precision Brunello.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pomona 2018 shows a vibrant, deep ruby core with garnet reflections forming at the rim, signaling both youth and classic Brunello structure. The nose is refined and layered, with aromas of wild cherry, red plum, dried rose petals and violets, supported by notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, sweet spices and a gentle earthy undertone.
On the palate, the wine is elegant yet structured, with precise Sangiovese acidity and fine-grained tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Flavors of sour cherry, blood orange, pomegranate and red currant unfold alongside hints of licorice, leather, herbs and subtle oak spice. The balance between freshness and concentration suggests a Brunello built for both early enjoyment and long-term development. With proper cellaring, this 2018 has strong aging potential, evolving gracefully over 10–15+ years, gaining complexity in tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor and dried flowers.
Production
The Pomona parcel sits within Villa Poggio Salvi’s estate in Montalcino, where elevations, exposure and soil composition—rich in marl, galestro and mineral elements—favor a particularly fine and aromatic expression of Sangiovese Grosso. Beginning in 2010, the estate embarked on a detailed zoning of its 20 hectares, identifying this specific plot as a true “cru” for its consistently superior fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and kept separate from the rest of the estate’s production, preserving the identity of the site. Vinification follows the classic Brunello philosophy of the winery: careful selection of the bunches, traditional fermentation with controlled temperatures to protect aromatics and structure, followed by extended maturation in large oak vessels and/or carefully chosen barrels, allowing the terroir to speak clearly without overt oak dominance.
Food & Serving
This Brunello pairs beautifully with refined Tuscan-inspired dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, mushroom risotto and aged pecorino or other hard cheeses. Its tension and structure also complement truffle-based dishes and rich ragùs over pappardelle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Brunello glasses to enhance its aromatic complexity. Decanting for about 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins; with more bottle age, a shorter decant is sufficient.
Producer
Villa Poggio Salvi is a historic Tuscan estate rooted in the hills of Montalcino, an area long celebrated for producing some of Italy’s most noble Sangiovese-based wines. Over the years, the winery has become known for its combination of tradition and modern precision, focusing on clean, expressive Brunello that honors the area’s classic style while highlighting individual vineyard character. The decision in 2010 to fragment and zone the vineyards, ultimately identifying the Pomona cru, underlines the estate’s commitment to terroir-driven wines. With its iconic Pomona figure on the label since 1979, Villa Poggio Salvi has secured a respected place among Brunello producers, helping to showcase Montalcino’s diversity and elegance to wine lovers around the world.
