Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Vieux Château Certan shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully expressive and complex, with layers of ripe blackberry, black cherry and dark plum interwoven with sweet exotic spices, rose petals, orange zest, glowing embers and a delicate violet perfume. Subtle, creamy new oak frames the aromatics without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, rich and multi-layered, with a broad, velvety texture that glides effortlessly across the tongue. The Merlot brings generous, plush fruit and a supple, almost glycerol mouthfeel, while the Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral nuance and precision. Concentrated dark berries, cocoa, sweet spices and a touch of graphite unfold over a core of fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity, leading into a long, resonant finish. The 2020 is more immediately approachable than the 2019, but still built to age gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
Vieux Château Certan lies on the famed Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux, where a mosaic of clay and gravel soils provides ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc to reach exceptional ripeness while retaining freshness. The estate’s old vines, many deeply rooted in clay-rich parcels, are carefully tended and harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is selected. In the cellar, each plot is vinified separately to preserve its character, typically in temperature-controlled vats, before the wine is aged in a high proportion of French oak barrels, a significant percentage of which are new. The judicious use of creamy new oak, along with sensitive extraction and élevage, shapes a wine that is both powerful and refined, highlighting terroir over technique.

Vieux Château Certan 2020 is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, venison, truffled poultry, or classic French dishes like duck breast or tournedos Rossini. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, earthy lentil or bean cassoulets, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold; with further bottle age, a shorter decant will be sufficient to wake the wine gently.
