Vieux Château Certan 2015 in magnum format is a benchmark Pomerol from one of the appellation’s most revered estates. Crafted from a classic Right Bank blend dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it marries opulent fruit with extraordinary finesse and depth. The 2015 vintage is already regarded as one of the great modern years in Bordeaux, and in large format it promises an especially long and graceful evolution.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Vieux Château Certan shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully complex and expressive, with layers of blueberry compote, dried mulberries and black forest gateau alongside notes of licorice, violets and wild garrigue. Subtler nuances of black truffle, sandalwood and rosehip emerge with air, underlining its Pomerol pedigree and the wine’s fine-grained precision.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and intensely flavoured, yet beautifully poised. The fruit is plush and ripe, wrapped around a core of savoury, earthy notes and a distinct mineral line. Tannins are ultra-fine, silky and present, giving structure without any harshness, while a vibrant freshness keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is very long, mineral and perfumed, with lingering dark fruit and floral tones. In magnum, the 2015 has excellent aging potential—expect it to drink well from now with decanting, and to evolve gracefully over 20+ years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
Vieux Château Certan lies on the prime Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux, France, where deep clay and gravel soils over an iron-rich subsoil provide ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2015 blend is composed of approximately 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting meticulous parcel selection. Vineyard work is highly attentive, with careful canopy management and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and balance. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to showcase finesse rather than power, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to refine the tannins and integrate the wine’s complex aromatic profile before bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Vieux Château Certan is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal with morel mushrooms, duck breast, or truffle-infused poultry. It also pairs beautifully with earthy flavors like wild mushrooms, lentil dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given the magnum format and the wine’s youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to unfurl and the texture to become even more supple and expressive.
Producer
Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol’s historic reference estates, with roots dating back to the 18th century and a long-standing reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most elegant and ageworthy wines. Located on the central Pomerol plateau among the finest terroirs in the region, it has been owned and run by the Thienpont family for generations, who are renowned for their meticulous vineyard work and uncompromising standards. Consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike, Vieux Château Certan is considered part of the elite circle of top Pomerol properties, and its wines—especially in great vintages like 2015—are sought after worldwide for their combination of depth, refinement and longevity.
