Description
Vieux Château Certan 2015 is a benchmark Pomerol from one of the appellation’s most revered estates, delivering depth, finesse and unmistakable sense of place. This 2015 vintage captures the generosity of a warm, near-classic Bordeaux year while retaining the estate’s trademark elegance and precision. Crafted from predominantly Merlot with a vital touch of Cabernet Franc and a whisper of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a wine that speaks of both hedonistic pleasure and long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Vieux Château Certan shows a medium to deep garnet-purple color, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is complex and expressive, opening with layered aromas of blueberry compote, dried mulberries and black forest cake, followed by notes of licorice, violets and wild garrigue. With a little air, deeper nuances emerge—black truffle, sandalwood and dried rosehip—giving a distinctly luxurious, Pomerol signature.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully refined, savory core. Juicy dark berry and plum fruit is seamlessly interwoven with earthy, mineral and truffle tones, supported by very fine, silky yet clearly present tannins. There is a lovely line of freshness that keeps the wine vibrant and lifted, leading into a very long, mineral-driven finish that lingers with notes of spice, flowers and graphite. While already captivating, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential; it should drink well from now with a decant, and continue to evolve and gain complexity for 15–25 years or more under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Vieux Château Certan lies on the famed Pomerol plateau on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, benefiting from a mosaic of deep clay and gravel soils that are particularly well-suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2015 blend is composed of approximately 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, each parcel harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and balance. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, flavor and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to integrate structure and add subtle layers of spice and toast, while always keeping the focus on the clarity of fruit and the expression of the estate’s terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Vieux Château Certan is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, pigeon or duck with truffle jus, and classic game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with earthy ingredients like mushrooms, lentils, and root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open; older bottles (10+ years) may need a gentler, shorter decant simply to remove sediment.
