Description
Vietti Langhe Freisa 2022 is a vibrant red from one of Piedmont’s most respected producers, showcasing a historic local grape in a fresh, contemporary style. This is a wine for curious drinkers who enjoy Nebbiolo-like structure but with a juicier, more untamed character. Once considered a rustic country wine, Freisa has been elevated by estates like Vietti into a serious, terroir-driven expression of the Langhe hills.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Vietti Langhe Freisa 2022 shows a bright, medium ruby color with youthful violet hues at the rim. The nose is expressive and lifted, offering red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with rose petals, dried herbs, white pepper and a faint hint of tar and tobacco that nods to its genetic kinship with Nebbiolo.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet energetic, with juicy red fruit at the core—cranberry, sour cherry and pomegranate—balanced by vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. Spicy and slightly savory notes—licorice, crushed herbs, a touch of earth—add complexity and length. The finish is fresh, dry and subtly bitter in a pleasantly appetizing way, making this an excellent food wine. While primarily crafted for enjoyment in its youth and over the next 3–5 years, the structure and tannin suggest it can gain further complexity with a few years of bottle age.
Production
The Freisa grapes for Vietti Langhe Freisa 2022 are sourced from selected vineyards in the Langhe, where calcareous-clay soils and rolling hills at moderate altitude provide excellent drainage and slow, even ripening. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, helps preserve freshness and aromatic intensity in this naturally vigorous, late-ripening variety. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal selection and brought to the winery in small crates to avoid crushing. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, typically with temperature control to retain bright fruit aromatics. The wine undergoes maceration on the skins to extract color and tannin, followed by maturation—often in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak—to soften edges while preserving Freisa’s characteristic energy and purity.
Food & Serving
Vietti Langhe Freisa 2022 is a natural partner to classic Piedmontese cuisine and a wide range of hearty dishes. Try it with tajarin pasta with ragù, grilled sausage, roasted chicken, charcuterie, mushroom risotto or pizza with cured meats and aged cheeses. It also works beautifully with tomato-based dishes and moderately spiced fare thanks to its bright acidity. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the tannins relax and the aromatics open up, especially if enjoyed in its first few years.
Producer
Vietti is one of the benchmark estates of Piedmont, with roots in the village of Castiglione Falletto dating back to the late 1800s. Elevated to prominence under Alfredo Currado and later the Currado–Vietti family, the winery has been a pioneer in single-vineyard Barolo and in the preservation and valorization of native Piedmontese varieties, including Freisa, Arneis and Barbera. Vietti’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sensitive, terroir-focused winemaking have made it a reference point not only in Barolo, but across the Langhe. Their wines regularly receive high international acclaim and are widely regarded as some of the most authentic and collectible expressions of Piedmont’s diverse grape heritage.
