Description

Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva 2016 is a benchmark single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piemonte’s most revered producers. Crafted only in exceptional vintages, this Riserva showcases the full nobility and finesse of Nebbiolo from the historic Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto. It’s a collector-worthy bottle that marries power, precision, and longevity in equal measure. The unique selling point of this wine is its origin: Villero is one of Barolo’s most celebrated vineyards, and Vietti has an especially long and intimate history working with this site. Low yields, meticulous selection, and extended aging transform the naturally complex fruit into a wine of remarkable depth, structure, and aromatic detail. As part of Vietti’s legendary series of single-vineyard Barolo Riservas, the 2016 Villero stands as a modern classic from an outstanding vintage with long-term historical significance for the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva 2016 is a luminous garnet with an orange-tinged rim, typical of great Nebbiolo, yet with a depth of color that hints at its concentration. Swirling reveals a dense, slow-moving texture, promising both structure and richness. The nose is complex and layered: rose petals, dried violets, and cherry cordial mingle with red currant, blood orange, and wild strawberry. With air, more tertiary notes emerge—tobacco leaf, cedar, leather, licorice, truffle, and a subtle smoky, tarry minerality. There’s a refined, almost haunting perfume that keeps evolving in the glass. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet incredibly poised, with a firm backbone of finely etched tannins that are both authoritative and silky. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate are intertwined with notes of sweet spices, sandalwood, dried herbs, and earthy undergrowth. The acidity is vibrant and vertical, giving the wine lift and tension, while the finish is long, savory, and mineral, leaving echoes of rose, spice, and noble tannin. The 2016 Villero Riserva has outstanding aging potential. While already showing impressive aromatic complexity, it is still at the beginning of its evolution. Expect this Barolo to develop beautifully over 15–25+ years, gaining further nuance of truffle, forest floor, and dried fruit while the tannins continue to polish.

Production
The fruit for Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva 2016 comes from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto, one of Barolo’s most prized hillsides. The vineyard’s calcareous-clay soils with layers of marl, combined with its optimal exposition and altitude, give Nebbiolo both aromatic finesse and a powerful, age-worthy structure. In 2016, grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only the finest clusters were used. In the winery, fermentation traditionally takes place in stainless steel or tank with controlled temperatures and extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for an extended period—typically several years—in large oak casks and/or a combination of large Slavonian and French oak, allowing the tannins to integrate slowly while preserving the purity of the fruit and terroir. A further resting period in bottle before release ensures that the Villero Riserva reaches the market with added harmony and nuance.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is an exceptional partner for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Think classic Piemontese cuisine: braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, game birds, truffle risotto, and tajarin pasta with porcini mushrooms or white truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, or well-matured Pecorino. Serve Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva 2016 at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is highly recommended, especially in its youth: give it 2–3 hours in a decanter to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften. For those opening it at peak maturity, a shorter decant of 1–2 hours will be enough to reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Vietti is one of the most respected and influential names in Barolo, with roots in the village of Castiglione Falletto dating back to the late 19th century. Over generations, the family has moved from local producer to international reference point, playing a crucial role in elevating Barolo to the world stage. Vietti was among the pioneers of single-vineyard Barolo bottlings, helping to define and communicate the importance of cru sites such as Villero. Today, Vietti is known for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and careful, terroir-driven winemaking that balances traditional methods with thoughtful innovation. The estate has garnered top scores and accolades from leading wine critics and guides, and its Barolo Riservas—especially from great crus and vintages—are highly sought after by collectors. The Villero Riserva stands as one of the winery’s flagship expressions, encapsulating Vietti’s deep connection to Piemonte and its position as a standard-bearer for Nebbiolo at the highest level.
