Description
Vietti Barolo Ravera 2018 is a striking single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditionalists. Sourced from the acclaimed Ravera MGA in Novello, this wine captures Nebbiolo’s precision, structure, and haunting aromatics in a particularly refined expression. With limited production and a reputation for ageworthiness, it’s a benchmark bottle for collectors and Barolo enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vietti Barolo Ravera 2018 shows a classic Nebbiolo hue: medium garnet with brick-tinged edges hinting at its seriousness and potential for development. The nose is layered and complex, opening with a distinct smoky, mineral-driven character—crushed stones, graphite, and pencil shavings—wrapped around dark cherry, blackberry, and a touch of dried rose and spice.
On the palate, the wine is focused and firmly structured, with vibrant acidity and tightly knit tannins that give a tonic, upright feel. Flavors of ripe black cherry, wild berries, and subtle licorice are supported by notes of tobacco, earth, and a savory, almost saline minerality typical of Ravera. The finish is remarkably long and persistent, with a finely tuned texture that promises even greater harmony with time. This 2018 has excellent aging potential; it will reward cellaring over the next 10–20 years, steadily gaining complexity and softness in the tannins.
Production
The Ravera MGA in Novello is renowned for its calcareous marl soils, high elevation, and cooler exposures—conditions that yield Barolo of tension, finesse, and distinct minerality. Vietti farms these vineyards meticulously, with careful bunch selection and low yields to capture purity and concentration in the Nebbiolo grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure only the healthiest, optimally ripe clusters make it to the cellar. Vinification follows traditional Barolo methods: extended maceration on the skins to extract aroma, color, and structure, followed by a long maturation in large wooden casks that respects the character of the vineyard. The result is a wine that transparently reflects Ravera’s terroir, with just 7,560 bottles produced in the 2018 vintage.
Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs beautifully with richly flavored, savory dishes: think braised veal shank, slow-cooked beef, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom ragù, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to allow the aromatics to fully open without losing freshness. Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours for a young bottle like this 2018—both to soften the tannins and to let the smoky, stony nuances and dark fruit layers emerge in full detail.
Producer
Vietti is one of Barolo’s historic and most esteemed estates, with roots in the Langhe that stretch back to the late 19th century. Pioneers in bottling single-vineyard Barolo, Vietti helped elevate crus like Ravera from insider secrets to some of the most coveted names in the region. The winery is known for its balance of tradition and precision: classic long aging, deep respect for terroir, and a relentless pursuit of quality. Today, Vietti stands as a reference point for Nebbiolo in Piedmont, with numerous high accolades from international critics and a devoted following among serious collectors worldwide.
