Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Monvigliero shows a luminous, medium garnet color typical of top Nebbiolo from Barolo. The nose is beautifully lifted and floral, with notes of dried iris, rose petals and violets, layered over crushed red berries, pomegranate, sweet grenadine and a fine dusting of powdered spice. Subtler undertones of licorice, dried herbs, tar and warm road surface add complexity without overwhelming the wine’s finesse. On the palate, this Barolo is silky yet structured, with a linear, refined profile driven by vibrant acidity. Red cherry, cranberry jelly and wild strawberry are framed by savory nuances of spice, tea leaves and a faint, classic Barolo tarry note. The tannins are firm but ultra-fine, giving the wine grip and ageworthiness while remaining polished and mouthcoating. The 2020 vintage delivers immediate charm but also a serious backbone; it should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers with time in the cellar.

Production
Monvigliero is one of Barolo’s most esteemed vineyards, located in the commune of Verduno at the northern edge of the appellation. Its white, chalky marl soils and breezy, slightly cooler exposition tend to produce particularly aromatic and elegant expressions of Nebbiolo. For this 2020 release, Vietti harvested the grapes by hand, selecting only the best clusters in the vineyard. Fermentation was carried out using roughly 60% whole clusters, a choice that enhances aromatic lift, spice, and structural complexity through the inclusion of stems. The wine then matured for 24 months in large, traditional oak casks (botti), allowing it to develop texture and harmony while preserving the purity of fruit, terroir expression and the hallmark finesse of Monvigliero.

This Barolo pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, porcini mushrooms, braised veal shank (ossobuco), roasted game birds or slow-cooked lamb. It also sings alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature alpine cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open up, soften the tannins and reveal its intricate floral and spicy layers; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment.
