Description
Vietti Barolo Brunate 2021 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most revered crus, Brunate, straddling the communes of La Morra and Barolo. This bottling sits at the pinnacle of Vietti’s range, celebrated for its depth, elegance and remarkable longevity. The 2021 vintage, already hailed as promising in Piedmont, offers a beautifully classical expression of Barolo with precision, structure and purity of fruit.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vietti Barolo Brunate 2021 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights toward the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is complex and layered: wild red cherries, ripe raspberry and blood orange peel unfurl alongside notes of dried rose petals, violet, licorice, fresh tobacco and subtle spice, with hints of tar, menthol and earthy minerality emerging with air.
On the palate, this Barolo is focused and structured with fine yet firm tannins that frame the wine’s concentrated fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and pomegranate are interwoven with savory notes of leather, dried herbs, anise and a distinct ferrous, stony edge that speaks clearly of Brunate’s terroir. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving lift and precision to the long, persistent finish. While already showing impressive balance, this 2021 is built for aging and will evolve beautifully over 15–25 years or more, gaining tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor and dried fruit with time in the cellar.
Production
The Brunate vineyard is one of Barolo’s great historic crus, with south to south-east exposures and calcareous clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and produce wines of power and perfume. Vines are typically of advanced age, deeply rooted and hand-tended on these steep slopes, with harvesting carried out entirely by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe Nebbiolo bunches. In the cellar, Vietti follows a meticulous, traditional-meets-modern approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, tannin and color, followed by long aging in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity and texture while preserving the purity of fruit and the distinct character of the Brunate cru.
Food & Serving
Vietti Barolo Brunate 2021 is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef or veal shank, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle-infused risotto, wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Piedmontese cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the youthful tannins and allow the wine’s floral and spicy nuances to fully open; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decanting just to separate sediment.
Producer
Vietti is one of Piedmont’s benchmark estates, with roots in the village of Castiglione Falletto dating back to the 19th century and a pioneering role in the rise of single-vineyard Barolo. Under the leadership of the Currado family, Vietti was among the first to bottle and champion individual crus like Brunate, Rocche and Lazzarito, helping to redefine Barolo as a terroir-driven fine wine on the world stage. Today, Vietti remains a reference point in the region, consistently earning high critical acclaim and producing wines that combine classic structure with precision, perfume and age-worthy elegance.
