Description
Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria 2020 is a precise, finely etched expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most historic crus. Delicate yet persistent, it marries lifted red fruit and floral notes with a refined structure that promises both immediate charm and long-term potential. With only 6,100 bottles produced, this is a limited, terroir-driven Barbaresco for collectors and serious Piedmont enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Roncaglie Masseria shows a radiant, medium ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, typical of classic Nebbiolo. The nose opens with bright rose petals, sour cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, layered with hints of angel food cake, subtle baking spice and a distinct mineral backbone. As it sits in the glass, more nuance emerges—dried herbs, a whisper of orange peel and a touch of sweet tobacco.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and finely textured rather than overtly powerful. The red fruit—cherry, redcurrant and strawberry—unfolds with a gentle but focused intensity, carried by vibrant acidity. The tannins are firm yet polished, offering grip without harshness and beautifully balanced against the wine’s freshness. A discreet touch of oak spice is very well integrated, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, savory and mineral, suggesting excellent aging potential. While already approachable with some aeration, this Barbaresco should evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers and forest floor.
Production
Roncaglie is a historically renowned cru in Barbaresco, characterized by calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its hallmark perfume and tension. The 2020 vintage benefitted from Piedmont’s temperate continental climate, with warm days and cool nights helping to preserve acidity and aromatic detail. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then sorted to ensure only pristine clusters make it into the winery. Vietti vinifies this Barbaresco with a focus on purity and finesse: a traditional fermentation with extended maceration on the skins extracts fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in carefully selected oak (often a mix of large casks and smaller barrels) to add structure and subtle spice, while keeping the expression of the Roncaglie vineyard front and center.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes. Classic pairings include truffle pasta, risotto with porcini mushrooms, braised veal or beef, roasted lamb, and game birds such as guinea fowl or duck. It also shines alongside mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatics and structure. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the floral and mineral notes to fully open up.
Producer
Vietti is one of Piedmont’s most respected and influential producers, with roots in the Langhe dating back to the 19th century. Based in the village of Castiglione Falletto, the estate was among the early pioneers of bottling single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco, helping to define the modern identity of these great Nebbiolo wines. Today, Vietti is celebrated for combining traditional craftsmanship with precise, vineyard-focused winemaking, drawing fruit from some of the region’s most coveted crus. Their Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria underscores Vietti’s commitment to expressing site-specific character and has helped solidify the winery’s reputation as a benchmark estate in Piedmont and beyond.
