Description
Venica Collio Malvasia Pètris 2024 is a vibrant, aromatic white that showcases just how refined Malvasia can be in the hills of Friuli. Crafted from Malvasia Bianca grown on Venica’s prized Pètris vineyard, this is a wine that balances Mediterranean perfume with precise, cool-climate minerality. It brings together the estate’s long experience with local varieties and the Collio region’s reputation for producing some of Italy’s most characterful whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Pètris Malvasia shows a luminous straw-yellow color with subtle greenish highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe citrus zest, white peach and nectarine mingle with notes of orange blossom, jasmine, wild herbs, and a delicate hint of sea breeze and white pepper that speaks of Collio’s mineral soils.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with a crisp, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the generous fruit in perfect balance. Flavors of lemon curd, pear, and stone fruit are layered with savory nuances of fresh thyme, saline minerality, and a gentle almond note on the finish. The texture is silky and slightly creamy from time on the lees, giving length and polish to the persistent, aromatic finish. Enjoyed young for its vibrant aromatics, it also has the structure to develop added complexity over the next 3–5 years, gaining more honeyed, herbal and nutty tones with bottle age.
Production
The grapes for Pètris come from hillside vineyards in Collio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where Malvasia thrives on the region’s classic ponca soils—layered marl and sandstone that impart intensity and a distinctive mineral edge. The vineyards are typically farmed with careful canopy management and hand-harvesting to preserve aromatic purity and select only perfectly ripe bunches. After a gentle pressing, the must is usually given a short period of cold maceration to draw out aroma and texture, then fermented at controlled, cool temperatures in stainless steel to lock in freshness. A period of maturation on fine lees, with occasional stirring, adds depth, roundness, and complexity, while oak—if used at all—is subtle, serving to frame the varietal character rather than dominate it.
Food & Serving
Venica Collio Malvasia Pètris 2024 is a versatile partner at the table, especially with seafood and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or baked fish, shellfish (think prawns, scallops, or steamed mussels), risotto with herbs, seafood pasta, and light vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichoke, or zucchini-based plates. It also complements fresh cheeses, simple poultry preparations, and antipasti with cured fish or olives. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12 °C, to allow the aromatics to fully open. Decanting is not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass will help the floral and herbal notes unfold.
Producer
Venica is one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s benchmark family estates, based in the heart of Collio and renowned for its meticulous focus on white wine quality.
